    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • At the beginning I wasn't really enjoying my internship as I there was a mix-up regarding the team allocations and I was put on a project that wasn't of my interest nor was falling in any of the categories of my chosen fields. However I was later changed on a new project which I enjoyed very much.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All interns in my team (4 of us) were treated with equality and respect from all other employees in our team and in general. We even went for lunch twice as a team and we weren't being treated as just interns that are here just temporarily. All of our team members knew our names even though they weren't working directly with us.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Whenever I was required assistance/ guidance/ help I would message someone from my team and they were more than happy to guide me. In cases that no one from my team could help me with my problem when I was stuck they tried to find someone that is more experience in that area and get me in touch with him / her.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • In general during the first weeks I wasn't really busy on a daily basis but this was because the project that we were assigned wasn't big or complex enough so that it could be split into parts so that all 4 interns had something to do. This resulted in having to pair program at many occasions. This changed though after I was assigned a new project.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my internship all of the interns in my team were given full responsibility for our code. This included debugging, testing and following the procedure in order to get our work into production. We also had to document al of our work done and the way we did it so that in the future new employees understand our work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Most of the technologies that I used during my internship I have used them at some point in the past as well during university assignments / projects. However I learned how to create end points in React JS with Python in order to retrieve data from databases using REST APIs.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in my office was generally chill and sometimes we even found ourselves enjoying jokes other team members said. Everyone was friendly and always approachable. The same goes for the other interns not just the permanent employees. Also you don't have to worry if you are a bit late in the morning as they are a bit flexible with the times.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall internship was very well organized by the campus recruitment team and we had different intern events and speaker sessions going on throughout our internship. We were also getting a weekly newsletter with any updates and upcoming events or deadlines we might have for that week and allocated some time each week for drop in sessions for any inquiries we might had.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invests a lot of time and resources to all of their employees including their interns. On the first day we get a proper induction/ session day where they talk us through some of the policies of the company, they also bring past interns to talk about their experiences and we even get to ask questions!

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I still haven't received their decision if I am offered a graduate job or not but I feel quite positive about it. However this is my second year here at JP as an intern and as long as you do what you are assigned to do and behave accordingly then you have plenty of opportunities within the organization.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were many social events amongst fellow interns and depending on your team there were teams that went for lunches or drinks after work together. Interns got a mid internship social event after work (a bowling) which was really fun and they also get an end of internship event (a dinner).

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It really depends on the exact are that you decide to live. Depending on the exact area you will find the cost of living to be higher or lower and accordingly the higher it is the closer to the town you are therefor the more social activities there are closer to you. Transportation is really good though so where you live doesn't really matter.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I am a student in the area for four years now so I am quite familiar with the Nightlife in the area of my work. There are many clubs and different festivals taking place through the year here in Glasgow so you always find something to do if you wanna go out.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were plenty of opportunities to get involved in activities outside work! There are numerous ignite groups where anyone can join as many as they want. Also we received many emails about events happening after work (eg. pub quizzes) and various activities like yoga or music invitations to choirs where anyone could join/attend.
