The Role
- speaker sessions - volunteering for a day - work-shadowing people in different sectors of J.P. - the work I was given to do - did some back-end and front-end development a - used a variety of frameworks - participating in team's development life-cycle - senior staff networking events - learning about what technologies the company uses - hackathon
- yes, I did feel valued by my colleagues - if I had an issue, they were happy to help - could easily talk to them - when I was deciding whether to do a 5 or 4 year course, multiple members of staff were happy to discuss it with me. - they were very helpful and allowed me to make the best decision - worked on something that has actually gone into production - for the first week, one of the colleagues spent a few days going over everything with me and made sure that I understood everything.
- mentor - she was very helpful and answered any questions I asked her - I could contact her anytime I needed help with something - had meet-ups once every 2 weeks with her - manager - also very helpful - kept a note of any issues I had and would resolve them quickly - happy to sit down and go over any material I need help with or read over any paperwork I was going to submit. - had meet-ups every week - recruitment - recruiters are very detail oriented - memorized all of the 109 intern's names and basic FAQ on first day - quick response to queries - generally, very helpful
- depends on the day, but usually yes - some days were full of networking events and work-shadowing - it was a nice balance between programming and going to social events - the team did not want to give too much in order to not make the internship too stressful. - the team will tailor the work load based on the intern and what they want to do
- I was in charge of the code I produced and to make sure that It was up to the company wide standard. - I had to write tests and provide documentation + see it through it's development life-cycle. - If there where any issues with it, I had to fix them.
- A lot Java Skills and how to use some Java Frameworks - I will most likely use these skills for my 4th year project - The training was looking at training courses and creating practice projects - I will use this knowledge in my future career as it is a frequently used framework. - TypeScript and Angular - Never done Angular - Will most likely use this for uni and beyond - soft skills like presenting and demoing to non technologists were also developed - had to present to senior management and my team several times - the internship provided some very valuable skills
The Company
- friendly - you can easily speak to a senior member of staff and not realize it. - relaxed - co-operative - everyone is pretty busy, but they don't mind setting 5 minutes aside to help out - the office I was in was pretty quiet, so you did get a lot of work done.
- pretty well organized - you can see that a lot of time went into planning a lot of the event and what the interns would do
- a lot - JPMC is interested in recruiting young talent, so they invest a lot into you. - they offer a lot of courses to interns and you can attend skill work-shops. - plurasight, code-academy and etc... - you can attend training courses - you do spend a fair bit of your internship learning about the various technologies
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare/Dental
- it is very appealing - good training for the graduate scheme - it runs for 2 years - you do a project for a local charity - not entry requirements if you get the offer - good support for the graduates - you go to London for 4 weeks
The Culture
- definitely! - people went out for drinks after work almost every day - good amount of intern organised lunches and little events - all of the interns are really friendly. - not cliquey at all - a lot of work organised socials: there are 3: start of the internship social, mid-point social and an end of the internship social - you can just sit with other interns at lunch and they will happily talk to you
- I worked in Glasgow - the commute cost was about 30 pounds per month - note that I lived 2 stops away from town - since I study in Glasgow, the accommodation cost for me was the same as term time. - but Glasgow is not an expensive city to live in. - the food in the financial district in Glasgow is pretty expensive - most of the lunch places cost about £6 for a meal. Places like bar-burrito, Panko and Philpots had those prices. - but the meal deals from Tesco/Salisbury/co-op are a life-saver. - drink prices in Glasgow are pretty cheap - there are a lot of student nights on
- depends on the team. - my team wasn't too social in terms of going out. - We went to team lunches. - but some of my friends teams went out a lot. - They went to a team lunch every 2 weeks and drinks after work at the same frequency
- went to a volunteering event hosted by JPMC - after work Zumba class - was pretty good - went to the socials and networking events - there are a lot of clubs/societies that you can get involved in.
