    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?

    • I enjoyed my internship at J.P Glasgow It was challenging to an extent and I do feel like my skills have been furthered. I feel like I could have been further utilized even more but I understand that it is hard to do so in only 10 weeks.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?

    • Colleagues were nice. It was hard because unlike the other inters, we were not placed in an actual SCRUM team and instead we were put into a makeshift team of just 3 interns. I think for other people the experience may have been a bit different, as they would have had the opportunity to be integrated into an actual work team. Despite this, we did still have the opportunity to interact with colleagues and were invited to a few of their lunches.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?

    • Some weeks support was great, others it was lacking. Thankfully I always had something in the back of my mind that I wanted to research for myself, but in terms of having backlog issues to do, this wasn't so common. Again, since we weren't in a proper SCRUM team it meant that we didn't have the 'real' experience. For the other items (99%) it would have been just fine!:)

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?

    • Work really wasn't that hectic. I would have preferred a bit more to do but I know that I the Glagsow Tech Centre there's a more laid back culture.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

    • We were given a reasonable amount of responsibility. We worked on a feature that will hopefully end up in production some time in the future. I know some interns were actually allowed to work on production code though...that would have been a bit cool!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

    • I'm really happy with the skills that I am leaving with. I managed to learn a new programming language on the job and get a firm grasp of production quality code. I know that this will really help me in my last few years of university and with any jobs I have in future

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

    • Atmosphere was nice & friendly. People were talkative and pretty relaxed.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

    • The organization was fine. At the start it was a bit confusing because the pre-internship forms that they ask you to fill out online were not being marked as completed on their end, meaning myself and a few others had submitted forms and then received emails a few weeks later asking for the forms to be completed...when they had been. The organization once here though is great. We always know well in advance when campus events are.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

    • I do feel quite invested in and valued at J.P. We were able to access online training resources whenever we required (much better than youtube tutorials!!) and that was nice. There wasn't really any training in terms of best practices etc but that was something you could pick up on the go, anyway.

    • Seem pretty good - if you do well in the internship there's a possibility of being offered the graduate program

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

    • Social scene was not bad. We had 3 internship socials at the start/middle/end, which were pretty fun! Just wish there were a few more.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

    • Glasgow is a great city with loads of options!!

    • Lots of clubs and bars if that's your thing.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?

    • There are lots of clubs that you can join within the firm, from yoga and hill walking to tech related clubs for people all interested in the same things.
