Actuarial Intern Review

I had a really great time on my internship, working in the ICT department. Within the ICT department, I was allocated in the P&C team. Everyone was really helpful and no question was a silly question in everyone's eyes which was really encouraging. The work was very varied and interesting too.

All my colleagues were extremely helpful and attentive whenever I had a question that I was struggling on. They took an extra effort to help me and sometimes if it even meant that they had to stay later at work one day just to help me and explain something to me, they would.

We had lots of training days organised for us where we sometimes had to go to the Reigate office. People would give presentations on their day to day work and essentially giving us a brief overview of their sector. Training on WTW's specialist software was also given so that was really useful.

I was assigned a very demanding project where there were strict deadlines for the work to be delivered and presented to different clients. I had my hands full with this particular project and also I had other intern projects on solvency II and reserving which was tough too but was very interesting.

So I was given a lot of responsibility by the Claims team that I was assigned to. They expected a lot of me and gave me the respect I warranted. I wouldn't be asked to make coffee for the team and do some photocopying, I was actually producing important client deliverables.

So being in the process of doing an actuarial science degree, this internship lined up exactly with what I do on a daily basis at Uni. I could apply what I've learnt from my internship next year in my degree, no doubt about that. Especially the extra exposure I've been given to the insurance industry.

My programme was structured very well indeed. Lots of training days were scheduled and we were given a detailed schedule when we started so that was useful for me to keep the structure. The projects I was assigned was given out in advance of starting so that was useful as opposed to just doing ad hoc tasks.

I received a lot of support from WTW. They gave me my own laptop and any other things that I felt I needed to help me do my tasks that I was allocated. I was assigned a buddy who was extremely useful and lovely. The general attitude to supporting me was very good and I felt really good about that. So I felt that the company culture was welcoming and really cool.

So I attended a really well structured AGM and an after party which was really nice. There were also qualification drinks for those who had passed their Actuarial exams which were really fun and it felt good that I didn't have to pay for the drinks. There is an events team that organises lots of fun events which I wish I could be apart of.

So having been in London, it was very expensive but this was expected. You get paid more in London so wasn't a huge problem. Also the company pays for a lot of the socials like exam drinks and volleyball so I didn't feel my wallet getting any lighter was really good for me.
