Corporate Risk and Broking Summer Internship Review

I think that the internship was very well organised once it began and that the support network was very good. It was interesting and well structured with clear tasks and objectives, however you had no choice over which division you were put into which means that you could end up in one that is not suitable, however this is difficult to change.

My colleagues were definitely very welcoming, especially my line manager. It was difficult for them as most of my team are based in other offices, but I believe that my team valued the skills I could bring and gave me work that would actually be of value to the company and their division.

My line manager was very supportive of me as we sat next to each other and we regularly spoke about my progress with various projects in an open way.

As my objectives followed construction projects, my work periods varied in their business, some weeks I was very busy, but in some others I had very little due to a project being delayed and not needing immediate attention. However due to this overall I do not believe I had a great amount to be getting on with, as I had to regularly ask for additional tasks

I was given a good amount of responsibility as the work that I was doing was the final product in many cases and I could see the direct impact that my work was having on the team's accounts.

I think the division I was in gave me fairly specialised skills that were applicable to this area but not necessarily applicable to others within insurance, and definitely not for other industries. However the more personable skills that I developed would definitely be transferable and insurance is a great industry to develop those.

I think the atmosphere was pretty fun overall, however there was a slight lack of diversity in gender and age which made it relatively stale after a while.

I think the overall organisation was fantastic

Although we definitely had attention through various talks, it was not personal in the sense that the training we received was general and group focused rather than looking at developing each individual's unique skill set (which I admit is difficult to do)

They are definitely appealing as there is a huge breadth of areas and specialities that you can go into, and there are exciting and growing parts of the business

There was a great social scene as we had lunch together on most days and were encouraged to socialise outside of work which we did many times

The area is naturally very expensive at it is in the centre of London's central business district

Very good, lots of nice pubs but usually go elsewhere for nightclubs

Definitely - although you would have to seek out these activities yourself, there are easy ways to get involved in lots of things
