Worked in a randomised technology team in the business for 10 weeks.
1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
My internship was much less technical than I expected and it seemed that my degree did not play any positive impact in my assignment meaning I wasn't using skills I could've and yet other interns were spending time learning the skills I already had. I still enjoyed my placement though because my team was very supportive and approachable.
2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
My colleagues were all an absolute joy to work with and even though I was just an intern I felt respected by even senior managers. Their feedback was also very encouraging and made the work I did feel valuable.
3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
My manager made sure I was busy but never overworked. He was always supportive and helpful in clearing blockers with positive and encouraging feedback from every weekly 1 to 1. I never felt like I was a burden and even though he was on vacation for 2 weeks during my internship I was not left adrift.
4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
I had valuable and consistent work throughout my internship. Busy but never overworked. Challenging at times but always manageable.
5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
I wasn't given a large amount of responsibility in my internship but my work still felt valuable.
6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
I learnt a lot about agile ways of working, and working in a corporate setting which is sure to be useful in the future. It was not very helpful for my degree other than seeing a previously theoretical topic practised in a corporate environment. I also learnt a lot about the cloud which was lacking from my degree.
7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
Professional but friendly.
8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
Well organised calendar with key dates clearly signposted in advance. However no preparation for interns resulting in many having no access to key systems, security passes, internet etc for weeks. The CSR council was overworked and so query answer times were very slow. many managers were't aware of the intern program structure leaving the interns to have to explain it to them/ or the managers were too busy to give interns any work.
9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
They did not invest above average. My team taught me things needed to be in the team but the program itself only offered a few learning opportunities like an excel course, a hackathon and a System Ops /Security tour.
10. What were the perks on your work placement?
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
Very appealing. The graduate scheme is very flexible and exciting with technical skills and learning more in line with my interests and degree. It's also decently paid and the corporate culture here is nice.
12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
Yes the interns had social groups and organised events weekly. The graduate council sometimes ran events but the grads and interns rarely socialised with each other outside their team.
13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
Most socialising was done far away from work in the city centre where it was very expensive.
14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
There was no nightlife near work. Once again it required going into the city centre far away from work.
15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
Yes but they weren't advertised as often or as much as they could've been.
