    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time at Handelsbanken as I was made to feel very welcome by all members of staff. This really helped to ease my nerves, especially on the first day, and meant I felt comfortable asking questions in relation to any tasks I had been given. I also quickly felt part of the team.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues as they were keen to find out about me and what I got up to outside of work hours. This made me more confident to ask them about themselves and what they got up to outside of work and improved our working relationship.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was fully supported in everything I did during my time with Handelsbanken and any question I had, everyone in the branch was more than happy to help.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were a few occasions where I was struggling to find tasks to do, however this was not due to the fault of my colleagues as they were always looking for things for me to assist them with, however when the office was quiet it was difficult to find things to do.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a reasonable level of responsibility during my internship which allowed me to use some of the company's specialist software and engage in tasks which, had they not been done properly, would have left me liable for the consequences. Whilst I was restricted from some tasks, this was due to the fact I was very new to the industry and had not had the required training.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have certainly been able to develop skills during this internship that I will most certainly use beyond my degree studies and should serve me well once I enter the workforce. I am unsure how much the internship will help my degree as I am studying Geography and not Banking/Finance, however this does not mean in any way that my time on this internship was not useful for my degree as there are skills outside of academia that have definitely improved.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was generally very positive. I believe this was because we weren't discouraged from talking with each other and getting to know what we had been up to a previous evening or over the weekend. Whilst we were able to have a laugh from time to time, there was still a strong work ethic amongst everyone.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was almost flawlessly set up and I genuinely struggled to find any hiccups in the whole operation. The HR department were very good at overseeing all of the interns that were with me and ensuring that each one was able to get the best experience they could out of their time here.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt as though the company invested a lot of time in my personal development as I was tasked with a series of online development modules which each required an assessment at the end. Further to this I was monitored by my branch manager to see how well I was developing.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I feel there were a lot of future prospects within the organisation as the company is always looking to grow. I was also encouraged to remain in contact with the bank in case there was ever a job opportunity available. I believe this internship has helped me get my foot in the door if there are any job prospects available in the future.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was definitely a good social scene in the head office as this was located in Manchester, however i was located in Blackburn and i feel there aren't quite the same level of opportunities as there was in Manchester. Having said this the people within the head office did make events available to all interns, it was just more difficult for some to make it than others.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As i was able to live at home whilst on the internship it meant my living costs were dramatically reduced. The area i worked in was quite reasonably priced to socialise in however i feel this was due to the fact it was only a town and not a city.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I did not experience any of the night life in the area i worked and so it would be unfair for me to comment on, however i did not feel particularly drawn to using any of the night life facilities and so i would imagine that it is not the best.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes however much like the night life there were many more opportunities in the Manchester office

    3/5
