    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was given meaningful work throughout the internship, which made every day in the office exciting and enjoyable. I also got the opportunity to meet with some leaders in the organisation and get involved with opportunities outside of the office, such as a Volunteering Day at Cyrenian's Farm. Overall, it was very enjoyable!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • As a group of interns we spent a lot of time together in and outside of work, which was brilliant for building a close network. Standard Life Aberdeen gave us accommodation where we could live with each other, which definitely helped. My colleagues in the office were always willing to help me and answer questions. Also the management were always looking out for the interns and willing to take time out of their busy diaries for catch up meetings.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisors gave me a lot of great support, feedback and guidance, which made me feel like a valued member of the team. When I was particularly interested in a piece of work, they would send over extra readings for me to learn more about that task and they were always willing to explain things in great detail.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I have had the perfect balance on a daily basis. I have been given lots of interesting tasks to fill out my days, as well as longer term tasks to work on throughout the intern. On top of this, I have been included in my team's meetings and had the opportunity to have multiple introductory meetings with interesting people across the firm. However, all of this work is perfectly achievable within the 9-5 office hours for an intern.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility throughout. On this intern scheme I was allowed to take control of my own projects and run them myself. As well as this, I was contributing towards very important pieces of work that my colleagues who actually had the job would carry out on a daily basis.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have now finished my Economics degree, but this internship has definitely helped me with my career journey. It has made me realise that working in Operations is the right job for me and certainly given me some clarity on where I want to take my career journey. It has been the perfect next stepping stone for me after graduating.
