    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship exceeded my expectations on lots of levels. I worked in the Newcastle office and was instantly made to feel welcome. The work I was given was challenging but everyone was happy to answer my questions and give me lots of help. The social side of the internship was great and we were invited out for things such as office drinks which really helped us to integrate in.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were so welcoming and instantly put us at ease. We felt accepted by everyone and everyone also made sure to check in on us regularly to make sure we were getting on okay. We were invited on social events with our colleagues which was a great way to get to know everyone. My colleagues also offered me feedback and also congratulated me on things I had done well.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Within the client teams I was working in it was easy to identify key people to ask for support. I was assigned work by these people and given lots of support in completing the work, they were very happy to answer the questions that I had and help me when I was stuck. I also had a buddy and a counsellor who would both regularly check in on me to make sure I was okay.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • On the majority of days I had a good level of work. I was very busy but in a good way and I enjoyed the challenge. There were a couple of instances where I was given too much work and I felt a bit stressed but this didn’t happen too often. The only time I didn’t have enough work was at the end of the first week, for the 3 days in the firm after the London induction event we were in the office and not yet assigned to clients. There wasn’t enough work for us to do so if I were to change the internship I would book us to clients as soon as we are ready to start work after all induction activites

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my first few weeks working on my first client I was working in a big team and given jobs standard for my level such as invoice checking and shadowing client meetings. However during my second client I was working mainly under supervision from one senior, during this time I was given pieces of work to start, gather all the required info from the client , and finish and hand off. I was given guidance and support but was very much responsible for reaching out to and meeting the client. I very much enjoyed this experience

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt so much during the internship and feel I really developed key skills. Some of the major skills I developed were teamwork, personal leadership and confidence. At the start I was nervous when speaking to clients but by the end I felt comfortable arranging meetings and carrying these out on my own. I feel even if I decided this wasn’t the job for me the skills I developed could still be applied to many other areas

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone in my office made me feel welcome and included as soon as I arrived. Everyone was always very happy to help me and answer any questions I had. On our first Friday in the office we were invited out for office drinks and this was a great way to get to know everyone.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Whilst the main bulk of the internship was well organised I feel the first week could have been a little better organised. Our office didn’t seek to have planned much work for us in the 3 days after the induction event and so these few days were not very well structured.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was allocated a buddy and counsellor. A buddy is a colleague a level or so above you who welcomes you to the firm and acts as a point of contact for any questions you may have. A counsellor is a senior member staff who discusses your goals and offers support and help with personal development. I think this was a good system. We also received a career counselling call midway through.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would really like to work back with EY if I were to receive an offer from them. I enjoyed the work that I was doing and felt I was challenged. Above all I felt welcomed and I enjoyed working with the team, the team and general atmosphere in the office made them stand out.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There around one social event each week that we would be invited to (for example work drinks or team meal). These events were great for team bonding and getting to know everyone. These were not compulsory however and you did not feel forced to go if you were tired or had other plans.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was around one team or office social event per week. In addition the office also has a netball team that you would be able to get involved in. We also had an intern social evening which was a nice opportunity to catch up with fellow interns and our buddies.
