    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the induction and learning about the company ethos. The work was challenging but with support from the team I felt able to push myself and learn new things. The team were all very friendly and welcomed me into the office, and I have made good friendships along the way.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues trusted me to do work within my ability and gave me tasks that reflected my skills. In addition, they recognised in technical areas where I might need support and gave me all the information I needed in order to push myself. Overall they were super friendly, and welcomed me.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • They were proactive in making themselves available for me to learn new things, help with tasks I was struggling with and explain technical concepts. Where I completed technical work, they reviewed what I had done and gave me tips in order to improve my output, as well as praise work I had done well.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was busy enough to always have work to do, as they provided a lot of stretch projects that were optional, but not busy enough where I felt overworked. The work itself had a nice balance between active work and meetings, and overall I wouldn’t improve things beyond what I had experienced.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given as much responsibility as could be expected given the nature of my placement. In a technical field such as actuarial science, they allowed me to undertake technical work and reviewed what I had done to give tips. In addition to this, I was part of a team that gave a presentation.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The work I did during my placement will help in my final year at university by allowing me to use my skills, such as presentation skills, time management and organisation to revise appropriately. As well as this, experience in the office will be appropriate no matter what path I take and was really valuable.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very friendly, with also a sense of productivity and seriousness. The work was always being done, but there was not a sense of pressure and tight deadlines. I felt as though, while I had to work hard and to the best of my ability, the office would support me.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was amply organised, although unfortunately due to departmental constraints I was not put onto a firm project. Despite this, I found lots of opportunities to do work around the office and helped many people. Overall i’d say that the internship was well managed, especially the internship team, who did really well.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They did everything they could to give me information about the firm, the potential career paths and connect me with relevant people to discuss ideas I had and questions I needed answering. The support I got in discussing my experience so far and where I wanted to god was amazing.

  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The organisation appears well poised to employ more people, as it is in the financial services sector, particularly consultancy. In addition, it invests a great deal into internships and graduates programmes and seems clearly focused on maintaining and building a structure to assist young people in moving through the firm.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were lots of opportunities for social events with other placement students and colleagues. The variety of events was also huge, ranging from barbecues and impromptu bar meets, to things like crazy golf and bowling. Beyond this, the internship was well placed for lots of other opportunities in the future.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being in London, the cost of living and socialising was obviously higher than average, but a lot of social opportunities were covered by the summer internship team and allowed for social events to be affordable and connections to be made. This was a great idea and really well thought out.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in London is really good. There were lots of varied opportunities and clubs to go to. In addition there are lots of pubs and restaurants. There are many more that I didn’t even get the chance to visit, but overall I think there are loads of chances to have fun given the location.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We had a corporate social responsibility day, which was a great opportunity for us to contribute to charitable events. We worked with Trees for Cities and spent the day in a park helping the trees to flourish. In addition, there were other charitable events to get involved with that were really enjoyable.
