    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship programme is well- structured in overall. The projects that I have worked on enhanced my understanding of the industry as a whole. Also, I get to experience the life as an EY advisor, get onboard in client encounters and solving client's problems. The team here is very supportive and always ready to answer any doubts I have. I am satisfied and grateful with this opportunity.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I always felt welcomed in the team. Although I am just here for 6 weeks, the team doesn't discriminate me because of this. Instead, they held a lot of social events and even invited me to come along. Also, I am never afraid to ask questions because I know the team is always ready to answer it, and the answer I received is detailed and specific. It helps me to understand better of what they do, and the team always ready to support me in anything I do.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor is amazing. We have countless counselling sessions. Since the start of internship, my counsellor has been so supportive of my personal and career development. She gave me a lot of detailed and personal advice on how to do well in the career and the secret behind it. She always realized that I am an introvert, and she provided some helpful comments and suggestions which help me to embrace my weakness and work on it to improve myself as an advisor. I have learnt so much from her and I couldn't be more grateful to have her as my counsellor.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It is summer time so it is really not the peak season for advisory. Almost everyone in the team is taking their turn to go on holidays. Throughout the internship, I worked on one huge project only, and my work was mainly project management. It is not a heavy work and sometimes I have nothing to do the entire day. I have grateful that even though it is a chill period, the team always try to look for something for us to work on.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The team trusted me in my job, and they leave some of the most important project management work with me, such as budget tracking and model development. Although my work is not very technical (I do not possess the technical skill yet), I took ownership of the project management job and oversee the entire process of it. Also, I am given heavy responsibilities in some other side-of-desk opportunities, like overseeing the entire project and take ownership of some of the key deliverables.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am studying actuarial science, so this internship did have me an exposure to what an actuary does in real life. I received a lot of training on what an actuary does, such as developing models and assumptions, some introduction to the key regulations and also some programming skills. I am confident that all the training provided would help me to gain a strong start in my career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office is pretty layback and relaxed, as everyone seems to have fun in doing what they are doing. Also, the team bonding is extremely strong here, as we have at least one social events going on every week. You know you will always have others back when you work, and the culture like this is what attracted me to the firm.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • 5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company provided me with a lot of training opportunities, such as introductory seasons to the professions, understanding the basic work they did, key regulations to look out for and some training on programming skill. The company promotes holistic growth in every intern. They focused on professional development too as they make sure you take ownership of some key deliverables of the project.

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It is not a huge office, so we don't have a lot of interns in the office. You get to know every intern in the office, and it is easy to catch up with everyone. Also, the company organized some activities for fellow interns to involve in and get to know each other more.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Edinburgh is one of the most expensive city to live in the UK, especially during the summer, when they have the Edinburgh Fringe Festival going around. It's still cheaper than London, cheap alcohols and affordable entertainment activities. It is not too bad if you are looking to have a good work life balance.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Edinburgh nightlife is amazing!! There are so many pubs that you can go to, not to mention they have the best alcohols in the UK!! It is always a pleasure night to catch up with colleagues and friends in a picturesque Wetherspoon, having cheap alcohols and great Scottish food. The nightlife is even better during Fringe festivals!!

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The company makes sure that you leave office on time to catch a work life balance. Also, the social team in every line of service have a huge social budget for the team, so you can expect to involve in some extravagant activities you couldn't afford. We always have team socials, like playing tennis at the Meadow and some hiking days together with the team, and paid by the company.
