Retirement Intern Review

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at WTW. My colleagues were nothing but welcoming and helped me settle in instantly. The work was engaging - doing real client work within the first week giving us great exposure and the support we were given throughout was second to none.

Within such a short space of time I have really made some great friends. As a cohesive team within work but also a group to go out with after work or even go for lunch with. I feel that we were valued and given the opportunity to merge with the office.

We were given a sufficient amount of introductory training to allow us to understand the Retirement line of business. The training was engaging and allowed us to learn in a classroom environment and then transfer this into the real life practical application. We had performance reviews with our line manager also.

The structure of WTW is perfect for getting the balance of work throughout the whole team, it allows work to be spread or transferred to other members who are less busy. I feel that we had a sufficient work load to keep us busy but not to the extent we were staying behind to finish work off.

Our workload was self managed meaning that we had the responsibility on our shoulders at what pace we worked. As mentioned, from the first week onwards we were doing actual client work.

Genuinely the exposure and skills I have gained at WTW I could never have gained in a classroom or really anywhere in my opinion. Understanding the real life applications of my degree is one thing, but actually using it in that application and being given the trust to follow that through to completion. Also, working as part of a wider team and learning how to handle yourself in a business environment is invaluable. The training will give me a head start after my degree given that I want to go into the actuarial line of business.

The office atmosphere suited me perfectly. There is an open plan setup so that everyone sits among one another, meaning you get to speak to many senior people even as an intern. We would often go for drinks after work or even out for food as an office too, which helped us settle in.

I cannot fault it, we were flown from Edinburgh to London and put up in a hotel overnight for our induction. Which included a talk from head of GB business for the company. Reviews throughout and plenty help on hand whenever we needed it also lead to a great experience.

We had multiple hours of training to allow us to understand the retirement line of business from a very basic level. Following this plenty side by side help in understanding how this actually works at WTW and how we implement this for our clients.

I would love to work at WTW following my internship if given the opportunity as I get on with everyone so well, enjoy the work that we do and feel like the company is heading in the right direction on many fronts.

Yes, we went for food and drinks multiple times throughout the 8 weeks. On our very first day everyone went out for lunch to welcome us and paid for our meal. I think the other staff members making these efforts to welcome us really helped us settle in so quick.

I stayed out home during my 8 weeks however for eating and drinking; Edinburgh is rather expensive compared to most other cities bar London probably.
