    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall, I enjoyed being exposed to the corporate way of working - I feel like having the opportunity to travel for congresses/meetings really gave me a sense for it. I enjoyed being part of the Pfizer culture which is warm and welcoming. I enjoyed making friends for life. However, I have not particularly enjoyed the work I was given. I suffered from OFG and did not have work for a long time. Therefore, I used this time to concentrate on my University Project. Once I had my own project, I did have a lot of work on - but it wasn't really work I enjoyed.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was well commended on the projects I carried out and did feel valued. I received emails of acknowledgment from senior people within Oncology after managing the Pfizer standalone event, Renal Horizons. My manager has also organised a leaving lunch. My colleagues were always friendly and kind and Pfizer has a great culture - the issue I had was with my work and lack of supervision.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Did not really have much support at all. I was mostly thrown onto projects and had to fend for myself which was stressful at times. I did feel like I could ask my manager, however, he was always very busy or travelling, and often didn't actually provide me with the answers I needed.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This changed a lot. Some days, I really did not have much on. Others, I had lots to do and worked past my contract hours. This was frustrating as there was never a constant flow. It would have been better to have had a number of projects to work on throughout the year in different areas.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility for one project in particular - that is, project manager of Renal Horizons. As a result of OFG, I was the only one working on it from a Pfizer perspective so I worked with 6 agencies and made sure they delivered everything we needed to pull off a successful meeting. Luckily, our medical agency (Synergy) was experienced in delivering this meeting and helped me a lot.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think my confidence in communicating with people will help me a lot when it comes to delivering group and individual presentations at University. I think working 9-5 has improved my work ethic and therefore final year may not seem as difficult. I also think that the broad knowledge I have acquired about the pharmaceutical industry will help me after University when it comes to applying to graduate positions.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office has been relaxed and friendly. I sat next to my fellow undergraduates which was nice. I regularly chatted to the admin ladies also. My managers were rarely in so it didn't really feel as if I was in a team. It also meant that all work was done virtually.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • In terms of my workload, I don't think it was set up very well. However, I feel like OFG contributed to this. With that being said, I did have lots of good opportunities were I travelled abroad for congresses, and regularly attended meetings in London with external agencies - therefore, in that sense, it was organised well.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel like the placement was what you made it. If you wanted to go out and do extra training programmes, socialise with people from different departments - it is all up to you. I chose to take part in a finance training and a social media training which I really enjoyed and enhanced my understanding in that area.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The only way to get into the company is to apply for the grad scheme. I did not apply as I would like to take some time after my degree to travel. I think it is an awesome opportunity if you enjoyed your placement. But the fact that I didn't enjoy the work, and also wanted to travel - made my decision easier.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes! Everyone was friendly and super keen to do fun things on weekends. I even held a couple of house parties at the start of the year. It was good being in a different location as it meant that on weekends you could explore! I tended to go into London, but also did Brighton and walks around Sussex.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Expensive. Living down south in general is more expensive. My rent was significantly more in Reigate than what it is in Surrey. Also, I tended to go into London most weekends as that was the thing to do. Therefore, I definitely did not find the year economical.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I lived in Reigate. Reigate is a lovely area to live in as it is very safe. However, there isn't much to do there for young people. Living in Epsom would have been a better option as there is more variety. In wasn't so much the "nightlife" I missed, it was more being a fair distance away from London.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • If you wanted to get involved in work activities there were chances to do so. Such as, running and football clubs. It would have also been possible to create your own little club if you so wished. Outside of work I tended to socialise with other interns - everyone was always keen to arrange things.
