    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was able to develop both my technical and soft skills, both through training platforms provided and on the job. I also had a really friendly team who we had a number of socials with which helped to make the internship very enjoyable. The induction at the start of internship was also great in helping me to build a network with other interns across the country.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Colleagues were very appreciative of the work I completed for them over the course of the internship. They were also very supportive when I ran into challenges on tasks, and pointed me in the right direction regarding how best to improve my skills so I could complete tasks to the required quality.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support and guidance from my supervisors was very good. I had both a 'Buddy' and 'Career Coach' to help me with my career development and understanding more about PwC. On the job, the manager I had was very helpful in explaining everything in sufficient detail, and also offered advice and guidance outside of the specific project we were working on.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the beginning of the internship there was a lack of work to do, and I would often find myself spending a lot of time trying to fill the day with online training courses. However, towards the end of the internship after getting to know the team and being proactive in seeking work, there was a good amount of work to do.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • On some tasks I was given a reasonable amount of responsibility, but the tasks themselves were usually not very important and quite short. It would have been good to be given some more substantial tasks over the internship with more responsibility, and the ability to make use of the skills we had learned in training.

    2/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I improved my technical skills receiving training in Python, SQL and a number of visualisation tools, as well as developing my softer skills both in the official training at the induction and over the course of the internship. All the skills I developed will likely be helpful both in my studies and any work I carry out in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere was great. People worked hard but were always up for a chat, and having the team socials meant that everyone got on really well. There was also a culture of going home when you've finished your work, rather than staying late for the sake of it, as well as flexibility on working hours.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • After the initial induction there wasn't a particularly clear structure to the internship, and it meant I had to be very proactive in order to have any work to do. Giving the internship more structure is definitely something that would improve it, such as a longer project that all the interns have to carry out.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was a useful three-day training course in a hotel at the start of the internship. Over the course of the internship I was given licenses to a number of training software packages, and whilst the training was something I had to do off my own back, I was given the time to complete it and it was very helpful.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects within PwC are very strong. There is good opportunity for progression in the future, and the path for progressing is clear. There are also different routes one can take to progress in the firm depending on the specific skill set one has, and it is clear how best to progress depending on one's skill set.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social at the induction event was great, where I had the opportunity to meet other interns both from my office and across the country. In the regional office socials with the other interns required that we be more proactive in organising events, but the social scene continued to be decent amongst our particular cohort.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was not too expensive, but at the same time it is more expensive than further north. Also many of the bars near to the office were quite expensive for Birmingham. Transport to and from the office was quite cheap and the commute was quick and easy.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Birmingham is very lively. There are events going on across the city all week, and it is particularly busy on a Friday and Saturday night. There are a range of bars and clubs that cater for most tastes and budgets, and the transport is fairly decent which helps when getting to the nights out.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a number of activities that I was able to get involved with during my internship. The firm put on a large 5-aside football tournament. There are also other sports teams that play on a weekly basis. On the Friday of each month there is also a social club that rent out a room in a pub where one can get a few free drinks.
