    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was never left to get bored, and was working on real clients, which made the work more relevant and interesting. There were frequent meetings and networking sessions, and I would often shadow another member of the team as they visited clients, or worked on something I hadn't seen before.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All the team were really supportive, and put up with my repeated questioning! They organised socials and networking meetings for me, in addition to those HR had arranged.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everything I did was checked by my "buddy" or another member of the team, and I got regular feedback on how I was doing. I was with another intern in the team, so we could work out problems together before going to the team for help.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was always work to do, but my team were surprised with how quickly the other intern and I got through it. They were very pleased with my rate of work, and would always have something more to do if I was bored!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I worked on tax returns for real clients from Day 1, and we were asked to prepare a presentation for the team's AGM, which was fun. We also made calls to HMRC and other departments to gather required information.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As part of the internship, I was sent to GTs training site, Bradenham Manor, for presentation training. This was a course all new starters would take, and the interns were sent on it because HR believed it would help us in our final years, which it certainly had! The software and forms I learned as well will stand me in really good stead when I return to accountancy after graduation.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a great team dynamic, and I felt supported and that I could chat with my colleagues. The socials organised were also great fun.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • This was the first year the internship programme was run, so particular attention was paid to us to learn for the future. The HR team were really keen for our feedback and thoughts for improvement, and lots of fun and informative networking sessions and socials were organised to help us learn about the whole company, and to meet people.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The presentation training was a great and really useful weekend, and was exactly the training a new starter would receive, and I was taught a lot of the day to day work of the team. I definitely learned a lot, and had all my questions answered!

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • In the last week of the internship, you have the option to bypass the recruitment process for the next year, and have a final round interview, which was a great load off my mind during my final year. I'm pleased to say I was offered a job, and will be back in September!

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Socials and weekly "Lunch and Learn" sessions were arranged so all the interns could meet at least weekly from their different departments.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I stayed in Camden, which was quite expensive, and I did need to budget. But that's what you expect from London!

  • Camden. Enough said.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Two big group socials and networking opportunities were organised, and I went out several times with the team for drinks and meals
