    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My placement at NBCUniversal has been by far the best work experience I have had so far. Waking up wanting to come to work is an indescribable feeling that I hope will continue to experience in the future. I believe the combination of the company, my team and my actual responsibilities was what made it all so enjoyable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All my colleagues at UPHE have become like friends to me. Starting from the Group's manager to my line manager and other colleagues everyone made me feel welcome from day one and has been interested in my development. The way people work together in this team is unique. They know how to make you feel valued by congratulating you for your successes.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager at NBCUniversal has been a great help in my professional as well as my personal development. Not only him, but the Group's manager too got interested in how my experience would influence my career path and whether I thought I was developing the skills and knowledge I thought I needed to make this possible. Every week I would have a catch up with my line manager, and a monthly catch up with the group's manager.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • While my main responsibilities remained the same throughout the day, there were days when I had to juggle and multitask between several tasks and projects making my days very varied in terms of how busy I was. These main responsibilities changed as the year progressed since I asked to do more or learn more, always looking at how I could learn more about the company and business.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As stated earlier, while I had my daily tasks and many requests I had to attend to as they came, I was also given charge of several projects. Moreover, throughout the entire year, I was always encouraged to think of new ways to improve business processes, develop and lead on any initiative and new projects I thought interesting.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I truly believe all the skills, knowledge and experience I've gained throughout my placement at NBCUniversal has made me more confident of what I know of this industry. I'm confident this experience will enable me to get a job in this industry and to continue on the career path I've chosen.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In the office, within the UPHE Content Group the atmosphere was always upbeat and cheerful, although always focused on business. It had the right amount of business drive and fun. Everyone knows how to conduct themselves when working or being serious, however, there was always room for talking as friends.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was highly organised by the previous intern and the help of all my colleagues. I started my first week with a handover written by the previous intern which allowed me to learn about all the main tasks I would have to carry throughout my placement year as well as explanations of the different businesses.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As stated earlier, the company, as well as my team and direct managers, always encouraged me to keep developing my professional and personal skills. Throughout my placement year, there were workshops about excel, sales skills, negotiation skills, etc. Furthermore, we had access to Linkedin Learning where there were courses we were encouraged to take to learn more about what we're interested in.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • In this regard, I think there is not much I can say. Being NBCUniversal such a great company to work for, I understand how the turnaround of new employees is so low. The opportunities for staying depend on being at the right time at the right place, for the only way to get a job here would be if someone else left.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Definitely! At the very beginning of the internship, there were several events that took place where all the interns were able to mingle and network being able to become friends and keep in touch. There was a WhatsApp group created where everyone proposed new things to do. And within the company, HR held several events where we could network.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • 4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were a few opportunities for networking with my team outside office hours. Once a week, we would have a gym class with my direct team which made it easier to get to know each other outside the office. Furthermore, we were encouraged by the senior team to hold monthly gatherings with our direct team, called Out and About, where we would go out and socialise.
