    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The summer internship program at Citi is very well run and I had a great time on it. There are frequent events to get you connected to the other interns as well as a variety of senior colleagues across the bank, and it is clear that a lot of work is put in to make it useful experience for everyone.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Generally most colleagues appreciate that as much as we think we know about banking, most interns are very inexperienced at the start of the program. I think this helped a lot in feeling valued as the first couple of weeks of most desks really focused on supporting the interns in learning about the industry, so that following that we could actually produce work that was clearly of use to the desk.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was a structure in place for receiving feedback from our managers, however if you didn't push for it to be enforced then it was often forgotten. This was slightly expected as ultimately receiving feedback should be more an interns priority than a managers, and as long as you did ask the question then there would always be someone who could find the time to meet.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This definitely varied by desk. On high flow trading desks you be very busy when the traders had time for you, but when they were busy you would be limited to reading up on the markets. Conversely on most sales desks there were always long term projects to keep you engaged if nothing else was happening.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As interns are obviously not reg approved, the responsibilities taken on are limited. Most of the work done was for internal use, and anything else would simply be done to support regulated colleagues. This doesn't mean the work wasn't useful, but I wouldn't say I ever had much responsibility.

    2/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The internship didn't assist in my studies, and I don't think they would wherever I interned - academia and industry are completely different. As for beyond university the skills you learn here are invaluable. On top of exposure to a range of businesses, you learn how to effectively network and generally talk about markets with people at all levels of the bank - I know this sounds cliché but learning to sell yourself and your ideas really is essential to your career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Generally pretty focused but the trading desks definitely had a more intense atmosphere whereas sales were a little more relaxed. People were always happy to sit and talk with the interns, but only when they had the time. Overall it was welcoming, but you knew that people's priority was their job.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Really well set up. The arrangements for the whole internship were pretty much set out from day one, and any issues were quickly resolved.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was a full week of training at the start of the internship, and once you were on desk there were frequent events to increase our knowledge of markets and banking in general.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. Many departments at Citi will be growing in the coming years, so getting into the right position now has great potential for the future.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. We would go for dinner/drinks 2-3 times a week, and often go out on Fridays and over the weekend. There were also frequent intern events set up by Citi, especially in the first two weeks, which greatly helped us get to know the rest of the class.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Pretty expensive, it is central London so I'm not sure what else you would expect. You are paid well though so this cost was never a great issue.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Night life in Canary Wharf is good for drinks but not for clubs. There are good transport links into the city though so if you want to properly go out then you can.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Citi set up quite a few activities for the interns, and depending on the desk there were dinners/drinks out as well. The intern class was a pretty close group as well so we regularly organised activities ourselves.
