    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the level of different finance areas I was able to experience whilst working for Intel. It was very self empowering to be responsible for key roles which directly affected business operations. The only reason this wasn't the best job ever, is because due to my limited knowledge of the tech industry, i did struggle.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have really enjoyed making friendships with the team i have been working with. They create a supportive yet professional culture and every person is very willing to help provide additional opportunities to the interns so that we could gain greater exposure. Due to the numerous social events hosted within the team this helped to create a friendly side.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was exceptional, the weekly 1 to 1 meetings we held meant i was able to discuss any areas i felt necessary - often this included career development and potential opportunities. My manager has operated with a number of admirable characteristics which I hope that I am also able master myself

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My workload was very intense for the first few months of placement, i believe this was due to familiarising myself with my responsibilities. When i was more comfortable in the role I was able to be more time efficient (leading to a lot more spare time). After this point, it was my responsibility to network with colleagues in order to find projects to take part in, in order to fill up my free hours

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During placement, I would define my level of responsibility by: if I wasn't performing my role, there would be no one else to do it for me. I am very much responsible for ensuring I stay up to date with my tasks. The role I have is handed over to my next replacement so the responsibilities remain fulfilled by the intern

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • On placement, I have learned a number of skills. Although none of which has related to my previous studies, I am hoping they will help with future studies. I have learned how to use loads of different softwares and tools, how to conduct myself professionally and the best way to interact with other professionals.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The Intel office is generally very quiet, with the Interns always being the noisiest... lunch times are where most of the communal aspects are encouraged, everyone goes to sit together. but during office hours, in general everyone is very busy and meeting rooms are used for in depth conversations. It is a professional environment but the large number of interns definitely make it feel more comfortable

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • When I joined Intel, the Finance department was going through a scaling process (moving many tasks overseas) which did create a sense of unease and ambiguity amongst the full timers. However the actual placement hiring process was very easy - I heard back from the organisers the morning after the assessment centre.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There have been so many training opportunities offered to me, in range of topics from "managing your manager" "professional development" "first aid training". A number of web based trainings were compulsory during my on-boarding process in order to gain access to the Intel restricted too. as interns, we were also able to complete th eBirkman personality assessment, a $60 assessment which helps identify the kind of working style you have, so you can better work with others.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Due to the scaling process, we have been told from the start that there will be no graduate offer to come back to this department. Which for me is a shame, but as I do not find Swindon the place i want to grow up in, I am not upset that I will not be coming back to intel. There are opportunities to come back into BMG if you show real success, but i am only interested in finance.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As we were a crowd of 40+ interns (80+ during the handover periods), there were always social events occurring; such as bowling, bingo, nights out, dinner parties and roller disco. Everyone was able to get involved as much or as little as they wanted. The best was definitely made out of swindon

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • In terms of housing - very cheap. Rent was £300 a month for a 4 bed terraced house, a 10 minute walk from work. In terms of socialising - drinks could be pricy but if you sought out student offers, it is possible to find a pint for £2.50! Plus, wetherspoons is only down the road....

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • minimal, there are 2 main clubs in Swindon, both very standard and grotty with the same creepy locals as you see at uni. there is an amazing cocktail bar which does 241 every day until 9 (amazing)

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The interns set up a sports and socials committee who are primarily responsible for orgainsing fun events. Intel is also very big on volunteering, it is possible to take part in volunteering days with your team outside of the office.
