    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall i thoroughly enjoed my work placement at Intel. The opportunities and responsibility you are given within the sales and marketing departments go above and beyond what you would expect from such a large company. I took great pleasure in coming to work every day because of the welcoming culture and friendly people who took pride in their jobs and wanted to see you develop and succeed.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like I had a lot of value to add to the team. I was welcomed into every team like family, where I was encouraged to contribute in meetings and my opinions were valued. The is a very positive internal culture that thrives on building "trust and transparency" and makes a strong effort to be all-inclusive, regardless of my role within the company or other diversifying factors.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manger was extremely encouraging and was very focused on helping me to utilise my time at Intel. They helped me to follow a personal development plan and encouraged me to participate in events and opportunities outside of my core role to enhance my learning and experiences. Other non-reporting supervisors were welcoming if I had questions or required support.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Each day / week had a different workload depending on upcoming events and customer activities. Day-to-day tasks took up a reasonable amount of time during the week but some days were much quieter than others. When working on exhibitions and events the preparation required heavily increased in order to meet deadlines.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My role offered up a lot more responsibility than I ever anticipated. As an intern you expect to be doing mundane admin activities. However I spent a lot of time operating as a program manager, and taking lead on being present at external events and exhibitions; including designing the marketing collateral, organising the booth, demos and even merchandise to give away. This placement has enabled me to have a strong engagement with customers, where many positive business outcomes have been generated from our customer interactions.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Operating within a role that is so heavily engaged in real-world customer activities and decisions helped me to develop my understanding of the technical industry and the ways in which the company operates. Doing so many events and activities helped me to greatly improve my communication skills and feel comfortable in presenting, as well as communicating with a range of people from a wide background of knowledge. my teamwork skills have greatly enhanced, as well as my leadership abilities through all of the events and projects that I have contributed to.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is completely open plan so no individuals are separated from the rest of the workforce. This creates a very collaborative environment that encourages communication and makes it easy to find/talk to people. The office itself can feel outdated in some meeting rooms but they are gradually being upgraded to feel more motivating. Overall the office has excellent facilities and even on-site physiotherapy, yoga classes, and beauty salon.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship program at Intel is very dedicated and well thought out. There is a big intern community within intel, where lots of full-time employees have grown through the ranks of previous intern years. This creates a welcoming environment where everyone is willing to support and help guide you through handover because of their previous experiences.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested time into including me within team building, skill-building and training activities as a part of the sales team. I was able to work on my own skills and learn how to better collaborate with the teams around me. We were allowed to participate in many training workshops, and were provided lots of online support to develop our own learning path.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There looks to be a lot of opportunity to come back and develop a career path within the company on returning. However these opportunities are within the operations and supply side, and there feels like a restricted path to a sales or marketing role. this is not always appealing to everyone because of independent career goals.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The intern community is very welcoming and provide a wide variety of committees to be involved in (including charity, social, and a publishing committee). We were encouraged to organise lots of nights out into town (sometimes with the graduates and full timers). the atmosphere is very welcoming and it is easy to find a group of people to socialise with.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Swindon is a cheap town to live in, it is easy to find accommodation that is around £300pcm for rent, as well as cheap drinks and activities on a night out. There are plenty of bars around that do drink deals and there are lots of cheap areas to live in around Swindon.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Swindon isn't great. There are plenty of bars to visit however the clubs do not feel the most glamorous or safe. The new town area isn't safe to be out alone at night. However in large groups it can make up for it by adding a really positive social aspect.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Personally i did not engage in many activities outside of work. Those who are sporty found local football clubs and running clubs to join. Lots of full-time employees participate in clubs that are easy to join .
