    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The topic of the internship was highly enjoyable. The gaming segment is an interest to me so being involved and being able to support my team was always enjoyable. Some weeks were less enjoyable due to work thinning out or conferences engaging the rest of my team - the majority however was engaging.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was relied on explicitly as the main point of contact for several systems, especially handling hardware sampling and event organisation. This made me feel highly valued. My team also didn't use the 'i' word. I was a fully fledged member of the team from start to finish and treated as such.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support was available through weekly 1 on 1 meetings with every member of my local team. I could place time in with anyone on my team if I had any questions. I was constantly pushed to achieve my goals and tasks, even when I let them slip or forgot to see them through .

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • When my entire local team was in, I was frequently busy for entire work days with a reasonable balance. At other times work would naturally slow to a trickle due to the nature of the industry I was working in. Although my team attempted to account for this, sometimes I was left with very little to do.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given great responsibility in many areas. I organised events from the ground up, ordered tons of hardware involving shipping, testing etc. My involvement with some marketing activities made a real difference, and I was trusted with open ended and complex tasks to complete in my own style and method.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • For my degree the biggest effect was improving my work ethic and style to be more efficient and consistent, following through on tasks that I have set myself etc. For graduate employment, industry connections and professional attitude are the two things I have gained that will carry me forward, along with CV, linkedin help etc.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office in general is quiet, with large areas completely derelict. Some days were mildly busy, other days it was a ghost town. The other placement interns partly accommodated for this. The majority of my team is in the US, so there was a disconnect on that front. The UK team accommodated for this by coming into the office most days of the week.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My onboarding process was pretty swift. Not many explicit things had to be set up for me, and IT support was available for PC issues. Pay, stocks and shares, employee benefits portals were all fine. I was integrated into my teams mailing lists/ permissions smoothly, which is more difficult than it sounds.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was trained well by my previous intern, something which the company accounts for by creating a handover period. My team were prepared to give me lots of training, giving me key contacts and people to speak to in other teams to improve my knowledge. My personal development was invested in greatly through funding face to face meetings with partners.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    National Travel

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Don't tend to hire graduates so much. Especially within my team lots of prior industry experience or technical knowledge is required which I won't have directly after university. More likely to work here after another couple of years experience working within a smaller company or in another role more senior role.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Interns frequently set up events. These ranged from day trips to parties to entire weekends away. If anything the social scene was too good - meaning there are so many events they couldn't be attended. Most of the other interns are friendly, generally professional and eager to have fun etc.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Considered a run down area by many but not so bad once you get stuck in. Cheap and plentiful pubs, restaurants, bars, clubs etc. Plenty to do on the weekend including lots of scenery, national parks, forests and public footpaths. Short bus to oxford, train to london and bristol for days out.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Interns frequently set up events. These ranged from day trips to parties to entire weekends away. Most of the other interns are friendly, generally professional and eager to have fun etc. Plenty of pubs, bars, so many that you wouldn't be able to visit all in one year if you tried .

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • went away almost every weekend to Faringdon, Bristol, Devizes, Bath, London, Marlborough. Great for walking, exploring, plenty of interesting places to visit. Very scenic areas just outside of the town to visit and walk. Stones at Avebury. Work also sets up volunteering activities and there are plenty of other social clubs.
