    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Great opportunity to see the inner workings of a bank. A lot to learn which is exciting. Can get tiring as long hours however overall it is enjoyable. Plenty of social events also which is good. There are also a lot of talks and teach ins which are a fun way of learning about other teams.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The more work you do the more you get valued as you're able to contribute.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • You tend to get more support from the juniors who are in your team as you work closer to them during the day. There are opportunities to get feedback at certain points during the internship from your managers and staffers however. There are mid reviews and final reviews with HR also.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • How busy you are depends day to day on the needs of the team and the deals that are currently being executed. Sometimes you would have to wait around for people to become free to give you tasks to do, sometimes you will have loads to do so just depends.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The longer you were there for the more responsibility you were given.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Developed a lot of commercial skills, also learnt how theoretical maths is used in the real world.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was generally very positive, people were friendly and wanted to get to know you better. Obviously at times people are under pressure so the atmosphere can change then. The environment is very diverse and inclusive which makes for a very interesting and stimulating environment to be a part of.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There were a few hiccups at the beginig in particular with IT and requesting access to drives, software and installing programmes which meant that the first week was a bit slow. Generally I was well informed about events and talks etc being organised however there were some that could have done with more communication.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had a full week of training at the beginning of the internship which was particularly useful considering I come from a non-finance background. The training could have been a bit more tailored to the desks however it was presented in an interesting engaging way. Also plenty of opportunity for training on the desk.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects are really appealing. The work is engaging and interesting and the products themselves even more so. There was an emphasis on career mobility as the bank is so global and covers so many different functions which was particularly exciting to me. There are also lots of opportunities for development which was exciting.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good social scene both with my fellow interns and other colleagues in the bank. People meet up after work weekly which is a good opportunity to meet people outside of your team. The interns regularly interacted with eachother both during the day in the office but also outside of the office on weekends etc.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Obviously Central London is not a cheap place to live. It is hard to find options for short term rentals over the summer so it means that it is more expensive comparatively. It is possible to find cheaper alternatives however generally I would say that it is expensive to most people.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are plenty of restaurants and bars that operate close the office and are open late enough for bankers to use. The nightlife is expensive but good fun and so would recommend. It is close and convenient too. They showed lots of sporting events on big screens outside the office too.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, as it is a summer internship the office is a little bit quieter and so many teams hold events such as drinks, sports events and some even went sailing. There was also a community day which involved volunteering in a park away from the office which was a good day.
