    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I really enjoyed the insight into Shoosmiths - I felt that I got an authentic view of the firm and I was welcomed warmly by the whole team. I was challenged to the right extent while having fun too, and I gained much from my experience on the Vacation Scheme.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Most people made a big effort to talk to me and went out of their way to have meetings with me to talk about their role and advice for getting a training contract. I was invited to my team events and made to feel a part of the team. Only a couple of the senior partners were more cold but they seemed to have busy roles.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I had a placement host who looked after me during my week, and other members of the team checked up on me that I was doing OK. I made sure to be proactive to ask for feedback and points of improvement and this was helpful for me. I gained feedback from the placement the week after its completion.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I gained a true insight into the role of a trainee solicitor and life at Shoosmiths. I undertook real work which I received through feedback on, and I was able to understand the culture of the firm so that I could see myself working there long term in the future.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Very well. We got introductory documents at the start with two key tasks to complete across the week. We also had a phone call with graduate recruitment at the end of the week. We got structured feedback at the end of the week. We were given a present bag during the scheme to make it individual.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Everybody was very friendly and happy to talk about career and non career related things. The working environment was professional while being relaxed, and it was obvious that people got on as genuine friends rather than just colleges. Some of the tasks were stressful as I was keen to impress, but that is just the nature of a vacation scheme.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was invested in to a great extent. After every piece of work I handed in I was given feedback which allowed for my personal development. Of course there was only one week for me to develop which is a limited amount of time, but the presentation task at the end of the week was a great chance for me to get final feedback.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I felt that I gained a true and authentic insight into working for the firm. I was able to speak to people honestly about their lives in the firm and the benefits and challenges of their role. I was welcomed with open arms and became a member of the team for a week and this allowed me to see how I would fit in.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I was able to understand that there is an open, friendly and inclusive culture at Shoosmiths. Experiencing life in the firm gave me great exposure to day to day life in the firm and the Shoosmiths way, and helped me to see how I would fit into this if I was to work there.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The experience consolidated my choice to both pursue a career in law and pursue a career at Shoosmiths. I felt that I got a varied insight into life at the firm and the work undertaken, which challenged me to the right extent. Talking to people was invaluable to help me understand the type of people who did well at the firm.
