    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship at RBS and across the RBS group offer such a broad variety of experience and exposure across the bank. Given this experiences vary widely but the support given by your team, early careers and the networks you build (including your buddy) are invaluable. So far I have found the work and wider opportunities engagement and challenging. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would recommend to anyone.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone was so pleased to meet, engage with and support me during my time here. They seem genuinely interested in my progression and invested in enabling me to get the most out of my time within the bank. My time within Ops risk was made so much better due to the team. Not only have they built a fun work culture but they welcomed and valued my input.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The team I was placed in was great! So personable and supportive. I had formal one to ones weekly with my line manager but daily catch-ups with him and his seniors. The wider team were very supportive too and always interested in the piece of work I was producing and wanting to support me further in my development.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I always had something to do from my individual project, meetings and calls to personal development and wellbeing sessions provided bank-wide. RBS has built a culture of change and its staff welcome the new insight that interns bring. There is always an opportunity to shadow a new team and network within new areas of the bank.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given my own investigative project which resulted in a paper being presented to one of the risk working groups. My line manager was very supportive and wanted to get me involved as much as possible. I feel like the level of work and responsibility was appropriate for the internship.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • RBS provide a lot of training during the induction to help support you and enable you to fully exploit the experiences. One major take-away for me, is the ability to articulate my experience and present them in relation to transferable skills. Also, the importance of your personal brand and understanding your motivations and the way you work. The importance of building networks and stakeholder management was a consistent theme throughout my internship and has given me a lot more confidence. There was regular training and spotlight sessions to help guide and further our Personal development.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very Relaxed. RBS work culture is great and they support flexible working hours and working from home. So much support is given to help make the job fit around your life and other commitments. Everyone is very friendly and there is a weekly football game that I got involved with which helped me meet people in the wider Risk function.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • In comparison to other internships I am aware of, it was very well organised. All the paperwork and checks were carried out months prior. The only blip was accessing IT systems once starting as my details had been registered incorrectly which was a faff to sort out.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Lots of support, sessions and training provided. Many sessions aimed directly at interns and grads then there was more optional opportunities which were open bank wide. Personal development within the time here seems to be a big focus and a driver for success you are recognised for at assessment. Plenty of opportunity.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • One of the most interesting thing when networking was finding out individuals career progression within the bank. As the bank is always changing and restructuring there is always new opportunities and employees are encouraged to branch out into new areas. The culture and the range of opportunities mean many of the employees I came in contact with have been with the bank across a variety of roles for a long time. Definitely an exciting company to be involved with.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Across the bank there was 170 interns, so there was always something social going on. The grads also organise official events as well to get involved in. My team lead social initiatives and events regularly. There is also lots of sporting opportunities to get involved with, through your teams or the graduate council.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Edinburgh is quite expensive place to live however the pay is generous so there should be no issues affording accommodation and other expenses. Shop around for accommodation but be aware prices hike in august due to the festival. I stayed in the haymarket/fountainbridge area which was easy access to work.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Near work, there is nothing. Most interns and grads live in Edinburgh city centre as there is always something on, especially in the Haymarket/grass market/toll cross area. Things get pretty crazy in Edinburgh when the festival arrives so definitely something to make the most of!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Personally as there are so many opportunities within work to get involved with, I was always busy so didn't explore outside.
