    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The summer internship at Citi is invaluable opportunity to learn from the brightest minds in the field. From day one you are exposed to projects, clients. There is an immense amount of new things to be learnt every single day. The day-to-day job is supplemented by numerous activities organised by HR to netwoek with other bankers, and to get to know all the different divisions within the organisation.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • On the very first day on the desk, I was invited to listen in to a client call and was then involved in the review. As time passed by I was given always more important tasks, and always more client-facing roles. Colleagues treated me as a person to rely on and considered me part of the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • From day one I was closely followed by two analysts, who had been on the desk for less than a year. This gave me a vital reference point. They have always been open to teach me and let me in on bigger projects very early on. In general, even more senior colleagues were always ready to explain and give advice.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Personally not too busy. This however highly depends on the business unit/desk. Some desks tend to quiet down during the summer period or when approaching reporting season. I was however given a long term project to work on during free time, and to be presented at the end of the internship.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • My tasks and responsibilities varied throughout the internship. At the beginning I was tasked with very simple slides, then I moved to internal tasks, very useful to the team to carry out their deals, and lastly I would work on excel models and databases used to do pricing of new issues.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • throughout the internship I developed many new skills from modelling, to client pitching, etc. Most of them complemented what I had learnt in school, but gave me a deeper and operational understanding of what at the beginning were just notions.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was very relaxed. All teams sit on an openfloor kind of office, and even the most senior bankers sit on the team. This helps flattening the hierarchy, and in general everyone was very open to questions, coffees, and explaining. There were no strict timings, as long as you were delivering your work on time.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was extremely well structured. We have one week of training with all the interns from all the divisions, a first 4-week rotation, and a second five-week one. At the end of each rotation we had a review meeting with HR and our manager to discuss the achievement of goals set at the beginning of each rotation and points to work on.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • From day one, I have felt like the onlu goal of HR was to make sure we would learn as much as possible from this internship. The rationale being to allow us to fully understand how the business works and whether it would represent the right carreer choice for us.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    International Travel

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The main point for the company to run internship programmes is to test talent in order to extend full time offers. At each stage it was made very clear that this would be the main goal, and each of us intern was given all the tools to secure a full-time offer.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Extremely good. Thanks to the week of training and the numerous social events organised throughout the internship, most of the fellow interns became very good friends. At no point did I feel in competition with them. Everyone was very supportive and ready to help or share knowldege with each other.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is pretty expensive. I lived in Canary Wharf which rent-wise tends to be a bit less expensive than the rest of the city. The company provides with a very competitive salary, which covers well beyond the basic costs of living. Restaurants and bars in the area are a bit above average in terms of prices.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Canary Wharf is pretty much a residential and office area. You can find bars and restaurants, but during the weekend there are very little opportunities for socialising. Definitely would need to go to central London for a night out. Upside: very silent area and you can walk to work, saving on tube money and sleep time.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • HR organised many events throughout the internship, such as community days, social events and private viewings of art exhibitions.
