    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I throughly enjoyed the Teach First Spring Insight Programme. The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly. I had the chance to meet many likeminded, inspiring people. Coming from Leeds, I also had the chance to experience living in London with accommodation paid for. Also, being placed in a school Essex gave me the opportunity to experience living there too.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Staff were there to support us with every aspect of the insight programme. Also, staying with many other insight participants meant you made many friends very quickly and this also made me feel more valued as I wasn’t isolated at all, even living away in another city. Also, the work done on the insight programme was impactful and I feel like my work really mattered.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • The first week of insight was designed specifically to teach us how to teach in our second week away at the school. The sessions were well planned, delivered and received. They manage to cover a broad range of teaching methods in a short space of time and I found all the teachings very useful in my school.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My degree is mathematics and physics. Although this insight programme didn’t directly help with my degree, it did teach me many useful things that can be used at university. For example, planning and organising. In the insight programme is heavily focused on organisation since it’s an important quality for a teacher. This skill is also very useful at university.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The programme was very well structured. At the start of the programme we were given a timetable to refer to for the first week. They were always spot on with timings and every session was structured well. At the school, they knew exactly what teach first wanted us to do too.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • There was a buzz the whole time. With around 100 participants I met so many new people and everyone was enthusiastic and engaged. Everyone really wanted to be there and give 100%, there was never a dull moment. Even the staff at my school were incredibly enthusiastic about us being there.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company fully invested in their participants. Many sessions were focused on personal development looking to push us out of our comfort zone. We had to present to large groups, use teamwork and leadership skills to complete tasks, and teach first supported us with this. The insight programme, for me, developed me as a person a large amount.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Insight threw us in straight at the deep end in the second week. With the opportunity to teach a full lesson, I don’t know how much more understating you could ask for with regards to what teaching is like. We were also able to see the day to day workings of a school and what life as a teacher would be like.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Teach first are very apparent about their culture. As a charity, integrity is central to their ethos. The company has a strong vision to end educational inequality and their staff certainly reflect this culture. Everyone working for them was friendly, approachable, and fully invested in the aims of the company.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • This insight programme is perfect if you’re interested in teaching. It couldn’t be any more hands on in teaching you about everything a teacher has to do. Right from teaching you fundamental theories about teaching, to letting you teach yourself, this programme is the perfect was to explore a career in teaching.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was paid, reimbursed all travel, and had all accommodation provided. The company sort out all your accommodation and pay for it. This is especially useful since accommodation is expensive in London. The accommodation is also very nice. They buy your train tickets to and from London and also give you back money spent on the tube.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • The programme involved many external speakers coming and giving talks. They came from many different companies and you had the opportunity to speak with them. Also, since there were many participants there was the opportunity to network with other students too. Overall, there were many unique opportunities to network with a diverse amount of people.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • There were opportunities to network within the structure of the programme but also social opportunities on the weekend and evenings. I went out for meals, went to bars, and even went to the beach near my local school. Since you spend the weekend away at your schools local area, you’d find it hard not to socialise with other participants.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, there was a Facebook page outlining all the social events. People frequently posted in here and it was a great resource to find out about what was going on in the evenings. If you even had ideas yourself about something other people might be interested in, you had to opportunity to say so on there.

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • 100%, I enjoyed the insight programme so much, it was almost like a holiday. I met so many inspiring l, likeminded people and am still in contact with many of them now. I found this more than just an insight programme, but an amazing experience which brought me on as an individual.
