    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • You are surrounded by people at the top of the industry which makes the placement great learning experience. I enjoyed the fact that you are treated as a working member of the team and people are more than willing to take the time to sit down and explain things to you. The year was very well structured, with regular feedback sessions and plenty of opportunity to mix with other parts of the firm should you wish. The hours are tough if you live outside of London.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • You are treated as a working member of the team. Once you are trained and up to speed, you are valued and given the responsibility of a full time employee. You are involved in team meetings / dinners / events. Feedback is provided to you by all members of the team.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I received 3 formal feedback sessions spread evenly throughout the year. These were comprenehnsive sessions and involved a review from several people on your team. You also have a chance to complete a self review in order to monitor your progress throughout the year. On a day-to-day basis, it is very easy to obtain informal feedback and people are more than willing to provide this.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The day-to-day is busy but then again this depends on the time of the year. You are busy because you are given responsibility so this isn't necessarily a bad thing. You will never be bored. Every day is mostly different and this creates a good balance. Social events are made available should you wish to participate.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • You are treated as a full time employee which naturally means that you are given a lot of responsibility. You are trained in the first few months on the desk and after that you are relied on as a member of the team. you are definitely treated as a member of the team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Organisational skills have definitely been improved which will assist generally in final year, but the market facing side of things will also help with some specific modules of my degree. The placement also prepares you for general corporate life after university, which is something you wouldn't have otherwise, and this is invaluable.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was friendly but professional. Colleagues were always happy to speak about weekend plans etc. but at the same time, you would always be able to ask serious work-related questions so there was a good balance between the two. Work drinks were a regular occasion which also added to the atmosphere.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was well structured. I have formal review sessions and feedback sit-downs on a quarterly basis and the training programme was structured. There was a good level of integration with the summer interns. HR regularly organised sit-downs and meetings. Overall, the placement was set up in a very organised way.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm put a lot of time and effort into training the placement interns. They give you a fair amount of responsibility. People are always willing to take time out of their day to explain things to you, however simple or complex it may be. The dedicated feedback sessions also help with development.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • You aren't guaranteed to come back but the firm make a decision based on your performance and feedback from your review sessions. You are given areas of strength/development in your feedback sessions and working on this will help in terms of whether you get an offer to come back after university or not.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes - the opportunities are there if you want to partake. Especially in the first 10 weeks when the summer interns are at the firm. The hours sometimes make it difficult to participate every time, but there were usually weekly floor drinks aside from the HR organised events. Fellow interns all participated.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Central London is expensive. I lived outside of London so saved money in terms of rent, but the commute is longer and would suggest finding a flat inside of the city as it will make things a lot easier. Socialising in London is expensive as well but that comes with getting a job in London so nothing to complain about here.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Didn't participate much but it sounds good. Expensive but plenty of options. Aside from the floorwide drinks etc, i didn't really feel the need to go out as was too tired. If you are into nightlife, London is a great place but be prepared to spend big (considerably more than most Unis).

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there was a community teamwork day which is open to interns. There are also several societies and sports teams available should you wish to take part. It is easy to get involved and your team will be open to you taking part in things like this so long as it doesn't interfere with your work.
