The Role
Great for a more business aligned/project management engineer but not for a technical one.
Poor engagement in my area which leaves you a little isolated.
Great touchpoints with my directors in monthly 121's. I was even able to get a meeting in with our CTIO
As a new placement, i was left with relatively little to do. This may be due to it being a new placement and the manager not really knowing how best to support me.
I was given a few projects that i could manage end to end, requesting support as and when i needed it.
Valuable project mangement skills, this engineering placement however was not technical as i had expected therefore little development of technical skills that will support my degree, chemical engineering. I would recommend this placement to someone studying a broader engineering or project management degree.
The Company
My area was unfortunatley very dull with poor engagement. Efforts to increase engagement taken by me had very poor response. Other areas of the office seemed to have a better atmosphere however.
From a careers point of view, it was et up very well with access to personal development and training sessions along the way. Specific to my role however, there was little structure.
We were given a set of training session along the year which helped with our personal development in different areas. There was also access to a library full of development sources online which varyed depending on what you wanted to do.

There is opportunity to be fast tracked onto the graduate programme if you would like to providing a successful placement year. The graduate progreamme seems more appealing due to its rotational nature allowing you to explore different areas of the business.
The Culture
Yes, if you live close to the other graduates and interns there was a better social scene with nights out and cinema trips. If you lived far away, you could still come, might just have to crash at someones!
Not the cheapest, i lived in Basingstoke where average rent was £500, surrounding areas were similar prices. Socialising costs arent quite London but not quite Liverpool
Reading was the best place for a night out, good as reading university is based there so lots of students and good nights out
The graduate committee organises events to socialise with others outside of work, these are varied and across the whole year so theres always something to get involved with!
