    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have really enjoyed being on placement. It has given me more of an insight into the industry and more of an idea of what I want to do once I leave University next year. I has helped me develop so many skills that i would not have had the opportunity to learn at university.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I feel extremely valued by my colleagues. We have regular team meeting and my opinions are listened to and taken on bored. when I came here I was expecting for my views to not really matter as I was a student, but its the opposite they encourage everyone to speak up and no suggestion is seen as silly

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have had 3 supervisors in my time at GSK but this hasn't been a problem at all. Myself and the other IP in my department shared a supervisor while we were doing our training this meant that we were both trained up to the same level and if we had any issues we knew who to go to. I then moved teams and got a new supervisor he left after a month for another job but another team member stood up and took over with no issues what so ever.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It varies an awful lot. Some weeks I may only have 1 or 2 experiments to do and others I can have 5 that need completing it really depends on what needs to be done. However on the quiet weeks it was easy to fill my time with training and seminars and helping other members in the team.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot. At the beginning you start off slow with training and then shadowing analysts to learn techniques but before you know it you are doing experiments with very little assistance at all. But there is always someone there if things go wrong or if you feel out of your depth just ask. Everyone is happy to help.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I'm not sure if they will help with my degree, My placement is in analytical chemistry an my university does not use these techniques very often but that is why i picked the placement to experience new techniques that I can use looking for jobs in the future. However I have learned a number of transferable skills such as time management communication, data analysis that will help me significantly in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My office is an open plan office with smart work. This means that each day you can use a different desk and pack up your things into a locker at the end of the day. This really helps with networking and there is always people around to ask questions if your unsure on something. Everyone is really welcoming and friendly aswell.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was really good having another IP to train with really helped us keep on top of everything. When we arrived we were given a spread sheet of tasks that needed to be completed this had all the codes for finding documents so everything was very easy to find. The whole placement has been well organised

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There are so many opportunities you just need to make the most of the when they are given. You can shadow other IPS to see different areas of the business. You can visit other sites. There are lectures and seminars as well as guest speakers and there are also things such as the WLI and Spectrum to get involved in.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Extremely. I love the department I work in and would really like to some back when I graduate. During the year there is also a number of talks on various graduate programs available to you so there are so many options if you like the company and want to come back.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I live at home and commute in so it has been hard to socialise but I still know all the other IPs and im invited to socials and nights out all the time. But I would defiantly recommend living near site if you want to make the most of the social life.
