  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • While on my placement year at IBM it was not only enjoyable but it allowed me to grow and develop as a young professional. While in my role I had a varied platter of challenging tasks and opportunities that allowed me to learn new skills and work in different environments.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Whether you are a veteran executive bringing in new accounts or an intern on your first day everyone who works at IBM offers the same level of respect and professionalism to every IBMer and gives the feeling like the whole company is one big team. This is at the heart of IBM's culture.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Throughout my Placement, I was given great support from my Task managers and my early professional's manager. Both offering different types of support and guidance. My task manager supported my general work to helped to guide me when operating within IBM. My early professional manager supported my professional development and helps with the transition from University to the corporate environment.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • On a day to basis, I have a healthy balance of daily tasks to execute with a mixture of Ad Hoc tasks and handful of longer-term projects that are worked on over a couple of days, weeks or even months. This allowed me to see a larger project materializes throughout my placement.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The responsibility at IBM goes hand in hand with the trust you develop with your team. The more trustworthy you are to executing tasks successfully and efficiently you will be entrusted with more responsibility in your role. This allows for your level of responsibility to grow at the same rate as your competency and doesn't make you feel overwhelmed but challenged.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • In my role, I have been able to apply some of what I learned at University into the workplace. As IBM is a global company this offers the opportunity to work with others around the globe and tests interpersonal skills to establish relationships with people you will only hear over the phone.

  • The Offices at IBM have a good balance of professionalism and open discussion with an open plan office enabling discussion across rooms to feel dynamic.

  • As I joined the team, I had multiple avenues of support and guidance when joining my team to make my experience feel seamless.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There are multiple opportunities to learn countless skills and attend hundreds of hours of virtual classrooms. IBM encourages all its employee's to be in a constant state of being open to learning new things.

  • IBM offers graduate roles and has a specialized process for those who want to go from a placement/intern into a grad role.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was based in Southbank with roughly 50 other interns. This made the social scene at IBM unparalleled.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I was based in London the cost of living was high.

  • The nightlife was great with loads of and pubs, bars, and restaurants nearby.

  • IBM offer Giveback opportunities for there interns and this give countless opportunities to help outside your role/work to help the wider community.
