About You
Very enjoyable. With regards to the other interns, I thought it would be a competitive and stiff atmosphere between us, but everyone was very friendly and personable, I made many great friends. The firm made each day varied and engaging, with some days ending in social drinks.
I felt valued (only to the extent a spring intern can be as we aren't contributing to any real work). We were paid, travel and expenses paid for and a hotel for those living outside of London. There was a lot of emphasis that we are the future of the business.
Any questions were answered, and there was always support, from other interns, to HR, to the business employees.
It helped me with finance modules, more from a qualitative point of view where I got to witness the very business that we were being taught about.
The Company
Very well structured. Each day was varied and included different sessions from networking to panel discussions and interactive games.
Very nice atmosphere, everyone got on well with each other and the business representatives were friendly.
They gave us technical training on different subjects of finance such as equities vs. bonds, cash products vs. derivatives, the functions of each divisions etc. Also gave us desk shadowing rotations in Global Markets and Corporate Finance. We were also given a presentation on some of the soft skills and how to dress / present yourself in the office.
Desk shadowing was helpful for showing us what life is like on a day-to-day basis.
We were taught a lot about the culture and values through presentations and panel discussions but also got to witness the culture first hand through desk shadowing; which changes slightly from division to division and desk to desk.
It helped me to confirm the division I wish to pursue in the future.
Everything Else
Everyone was paid and daily travel expenses to and from the office was paid for. Some lunches were hosted by the firm. Those travelling from outside of London had a hotel paid and booked for us.
There was a lot of opportunity for this, the insight week had a networking event with business representatives, and desk shadowing allowed us to network on our desk.
Networking events were good but there is the ratio problem of several interns to one employee so interactions can get cramped / awkward at times. Social event was enjoyable.
There were lots on sport and charitable activities and employees are happy to talk about it if you ask them.
100% recommend. Very good insight with an opportunity to convert directly to summer offer which not every bank offers.
