Spring Week Into Technology Review

I greatly enjoyed the overall experience of the insight and managed to leave with valuable information regarding the company itself and my own skill set. The various challenges throughout the week helped keep the event interesting and promote teamwork amongst attendees. The tours and work shadowing gave a different perspective of computing that I wasn't aware of at university, which was nice.

The company made it clear at the start that the spring week insight is a stepping stone into progressing further into J.P Morgan. The transition from the internship to graduate scheme was made clear from the graduate panel on the first day. This put emphasis on how much they value their interns as they showed clearly how to progress as an individual.

Lots of guidance was given throughout the week, with mentors assigned to groups during tasks and sufficient support documents provided on the first day. The mentors gave valuable information, steering you in the right direction and. The mentors also gave insight into their line of work and the overall sector.

The individual and group tasks taught important lessons of teamwork, time management and self awareness. It was made clear that in this line of work, you have to scrutinise every piece of information you get as specifications can be vague and misleading. I was able to demonstrate my strong communication skills and build on them during my time there.

The insight was structured very well, with an information booklet containing the overall itinerary and short descriptions of each day. It also contained the other attendees and a short icebreaker to help everyone get to know each other much easier. Overall, the days were structured well and never got dull.

The general atmosphere was very positive and uplifting. Lots of emphasis was put on the flexible nature of the company and how there is a lot of internal mobility. Ensuring that everyone is happy and working in the areas they want to be in. This reflected into the spring week as workers were very friendly and accommodating to our questions.

It was made very clear at the start that the option is there if you want to learn a new skill or switch department. They are adamant on constantly learning and challenging yourself. The skills learnt doesn't have to be necessarily relevant for the department you work in and can be a skill for the future.

The work shadowing helped me understand how a software engineer operates within a huge company. It was interesting to see how the information I had learnt during my studies translated into the workplace and how relevant my degree was. It also showcased the type of people that work there and who I would come across.

The tours of the office showed how the company promotes open plan offices, promoting interaction between peers and everyone is on the same level. The insight showcased the friendly nature of employees and how welcoming the environment is to work in. It also gave me awareness on hours and how long I would be expected to work.

It was very valuable and persuasive as the overall experience was very inviting. The attendees were made to feel very welcome by employees and generally by how much preparation was put on for the internship.

I was not paid or reimbursed for expenses, however if you required public transport to the location or a hotel, the firm covered those costs for the duration of the stay. There was also a dinner allowance on nights where dinner was not provided. This appeals to attendees outwith the host city.

I would definitely recommend the Spring Week insight to a friend, as it is a huge eye opener. The opportunities provided to you during the week are unique, from networking with senior employees to speakers who are the top of their field. Overall a very informative experience that should not be missed out on.
