    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Placement in Cummins is a great opportunity for everyone, you feel like a part of a company and you get to do "proper" work. You're never treated as an intern. You have full support during your placement and plenty of training. Working hours are quite flexible and the atmosphere is nice.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • People treated me very well throughout my placement. There are team exercises and event also outside of work. You're never feeling like you're on your own, you're always able to ask questions. In some companies people treat interns or placement like cheap labor but it didn't happen here, always felt like a part of the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • When you start your manager gives you set of objectives, training pack and its open for your suggestions. I had both theoretical training and hands on experience. Also had a by weekly one to one with my manager to discuss the progress/ any issues or additional work throughout my placement.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Mostly I was busy, but in the role I was in it obviously varied depending on the time of the year. When you're working on projects you usually get busy/ peak times and quiet periods depending on the stage of the project. However, I also had day to day work that kept me busy.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Surprisingly I did have quite a lot of responsibility. I did not expect this level of responsibility on my placement, but since the first day I've been given projects to work on. I would definitely recommend a placement in Cummins to everyone who actually wants to get something from their placement and progress in their career.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Not only I received a lot of training, but also was able to do professional qualifications while on my placement. I got plenty of support with my dissertation and got time off to attend uni meetings/ ask lecturers about my dissertation etc. They also give you plenty of information and support towards your further studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In general the atmosphere in the office is quite professional, but people are quite relaxed and fun to be around. There are open space offices, so you can always talk to people around you. There are quite a few office initiatives like bake offs, sweet treats, casual Fridays and after work events.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Quite organized, before you join there is meet and greet with all placement students where you have a little briefing about the company, you meet your manager etc. Then after you start there is a day induction and health and safety training. Overall it's quite organized as a official placement.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had plenty of training since I started. The induction process took over 2 months where the previous placement student was teaching me. Got also hands on experience in building a turbo and technical knowledge. Everyone is very supportive and it's very easy to learn. There are also online courses which you can take to learn more.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare/Dental

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Cummins doesn't go a formal graduate scheme in the area I worked with. The main one is in engineering. But there is a lot of placement students coming back to Cummins after graduation. You can always stay in touch after finishing your placement and it's definitely easier to get a job when you had a placement here.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There is a big placement students community. There is over 30 of them in different roles in one site. Some placement students found accommodation together and there are events where you can meet other students as well as meet and greet event and induction to the company. Also you're able to work with them on different projects etc

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Huddersfield is very cheap to live in. Not the best place for a night out, it's a small town, but you wont spend a fortune. Placement students often go Leeds for a night out, it's only 20min by train. Accommodation is cheap so you can save a lot of money and there is no need for public transport, because the town is small.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are 2 night clubs in Huddersfield, there is an university here, so there are plenty of students around. But night life is pretty poor as there aren't many places to go to. Camel is a good night club. You can always go Leeds which is quite close or Manchester.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There is quite a lot of activities outside of work, EEEC is a community involvement when you can volunteer during work, you can go out to the community and help cleaning a footpath, deliver meals to elderly people or work in a charity shop. Also there is football and badminton club and other sports.
