About You
I really enjoyed my Women in Business placement in Corporate Tax as I shadowed many senior female leaders across the business area so I could see the scope of the work I could undertake in Corporate Tax. I was involved in many department meetings and made to feel really included and valued by the department even though my placement was only three days long.
I feel very valued during my work shadowing placement despite being at the firm for only three days. All the staff were really friendly and more than willing to talk about their roles and journeys with PwC at any time during my placement. The senior leaders were very inclusive of me and would always introduce me to other leaders across the firm during meetings and in the corridors.
I received an invaluable insight into what a graduate career in corporate tax at PwC would be like and received information about the qualifications I would study and the support that was available in the firm whilst studying for the ACA qualification. The senior leaders that I shadowed were very informative providing me with information about leadership development programmes and the opportunities available within the firm.
The placement really enhanced my networking skills and my ability to build relationships outside of my area, whether that be talking with other individuals from other service lines during meetings or speaking to individuals within corporate tax. I also developed my communication skills during the placement, both skills which will be really beneficial to me in my roles and work at University.
The Company
The placement was structured very well and the senior female leader who I shadowed had tailored and planned my three days very well so that I could meet other female leaders in the business also to really enhance my experience and learn as much as possible at the firm in the three days.
The was a really nice, friendly and collegiate atmosphere in the firm and in particular, my department. Everyone was always willing to talk to you or help you navigate around your laptop so that I could understand how technologically connected the company is. There was also a really focused atmosphere where everyone could complete their work to the highest standard.
The company has invested time into my skills development during and after the placement. I was given a laptop so that I could complete work that I was given and to enhance my IT skills. I have also been offered the opportunity to become a PwC Campus Ambassador at my University due to undertaking the Women in Business Programme which has helped to develop my confidence and networking and relationship building skills.
The work shadowing allowed me to witness what a full time role would be like at the firm because I was in the office working with the staff and had the opportunity to see the scope and significance of the work carried out in corporate tax. Having been on other Big 4 Insight programmesin which presentations are delivered and staff come in to talk about their experiences, this is a completely different experience because you see first-hand what the work actually involves and what it is actually like to work for the firm in reality.
The insight helped me understand the friendly, supportive and focused working culture where everyone is valued for the contributions they make. I saw how employees are offered a working environment where they can work in a focused manner and develop their professional insight and experience. The programme allowed me to see the open and connected environment where you can build connections across the firm, not just within your service line.
It was very helpful as it helped me to confirm for myself that corporate tax was the service line that I wanted to pursue a career in. It helped me understand the variety of work that I could be invoved in and it allowed me to think about the professional opportunities and qualification that I could gain in a graduate career in corporate tax at PwC.
Everything Else
There were opportunities to network and meet employees across the service line and wider firm also, throughout my placement. I spoke with employees during the day, and over lunch to get to hear their journeys with PwC and advice they had for my future career. I also had the opportunity to network with employees across a range of levels including school leaver, managers and directors.
I was invited to attend to attend the department lunch on my final day and had the opportunity to sit with senior leaders from other offices which I felt extremely privilege to have the opportunity to do so. Through networking with individuals at the fine I learnt about all the social, sporting and volunteering activities that you can get involved in at the firm.
Yes definitely, as it is a first-hand, immersive and engaging work shadowing experience compared to other big 4 insight programmes!
