The Role
I really enjoyed my time at Markel. The work was interesting, my colleagues caring and the culture refreshing. I would recommend the opportunity to anyone interested in the world of insurance.
My manager, and team, could not have been more supportive. Each of my colleagues invested a fair amount of their time in me and made themselves available to answer any of my questions. I had bi-weekly catch-ups with my manager, whose guidance was invaluable over the course of the placement.
I always had something to do, but was never overwhelmed. Over the year, I worked on various projects with different stakeholders and even organised the department's Secret Santa!
Core tasks, for which I was solely responsible, were handed over to me by my predecessor a month into my placement. Over the year, my responsibilities grew and I sometimes reported directly to the Head of Actuarial.
The experience was invaluable. I attended all sorts of courses, which helped me develop both my technical and soft skills and I returned to university with a better understanding of the actuarial profession.
The Company
A good balance between fun and productive.
The placement was well structured in that there was a handover period, which lasted a month, at the beginning and end of my placement. My annual goals and key responsibilities were clear and there was always someone to support me.
Markel values its employees and offers them a wide variety of experiences and courses. I was surprised by the amount of training I received, considering that I was not a permanent member of staff.
