    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was extremely enjoyable, with a dedicated intern recruitment team who hosted multiple social events such as Bounce and Ballie Ballerson as well as lunch and learns which included learning about different aspects of the business and dedicated training sessions on R, Python, SQL and big data technologies. This allowed there to be a network of interns where we could call upon each other to ask questions and support one another.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • As an intern at Expedia Group, I felt very much as a member of the team and was treated that way with many of the same benefits and levels of responsibility that you would have as a full time employee. The work I did significantly contributed towards my teams goals and it wasn't just work for the sake of it.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support was great in terms of training events, staff and my supervisor/managers. As an intern at Expedia Group, you are given a "buddy" whose role it is to support and guide you through your internship as your first point of call. On top of this I had a very supportive manager who I regularly caught up with and gave me any guidance and great feedback when required.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • You keep busy as an intern at Expedia Group but not to the level of stress or burnout as they know you are an intern and don't want to overload you. Personally I didn't have one big project, but three smaller ones which allowed me to use my time management and organisation skills.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given responsibility to lead a development of a tableu dashboard and also to build a new 'onboarding' page on an internal internet site. While I had the responsibility of this, I wasn't left to my own devices and could call upon a number of different people if I ever needed help.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed a variety of technical and more soft skills on my summer internship at Expedia Group. Technical skills include: web developement, R, Python, SQL, Tableau, CSS, HTML, PHP, javascript and softer skills include: professionalism, time management, organisation, teamwork and communication. These were done through both formal training and casually from learning from colleagues.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The culture and atmosphere in the office at Expedia Group is similar to that of a start up company, but with a financial backing of a global company. You can wear what you like, work flexible hours, multiple social events in the calendar for both full time staff and just for interns.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship and placement scheme at Expedia Group is well set up with a dedicated Early Talent Recruitment team who made us feel very welcome from day one when they onboarded us right the way through to our very last day. Email DL's were set up and a Slack channel so we could ask any questions and communicate easily.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • While no external training was completed on a formal paid basis, there were multiple training events through the summer internship which were relevant to my job (analytics) and were also run alongside the placement students which allowed me to gain a bigger network of colleagues and then we could help each other post-training.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Working from home

    Travel loan

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects with Expedia Group are extremely appealing, so much so that I accepted a job offer post-internship and am now working in the same team. The retention rate from internships and placement students is very high and is a great way for anyone looking to gain experience and increase their network base.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, as the Early Talent Recruitment team set up many social events we were all able to have a good social scene in and out of the formal events. A table tennis league was set up so we could all meet individually and we would regularly go out for drinks and have lunches.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • In London, it is expensive. I stayed in a temporary housing solution at a University halls in between Angel and Old Street. This was £240 per week but included all bills and was hassle free as I just booked the room online. En-suite and shared kitchen for 8 but it was normally only at 50% capacity at any one time.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • We worked close to Old Street tube station which is near Shoreditch. There are many bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs here which are a great night out and is a place where lots of people in and around London go for a night. Also we were close to upper street which is a lively street and was great for the World Cup.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes we had a hackathon where we worked in teams to solve different problems within and related to business at Expedia Group. There were also charity events and we did a days worth of improving the running track at victoria park which was a greta way to bond with the wider team.
