    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed it a lot. I was part of a team who made me feel comfortable from day one and supported me throughout the duration of my internship. I had the flexibility to try a lot of different projects that fell outside of the traditional scope of my internship role.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very appreciated by my colleagues who were thankful for the work that I did. There was even a channel on slack called appreciations that my manager used to give me and our team a shoutout. Definitely a place that recognises the hard work you do, which makes you want to do even more.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Definitely had a lot of support from both my line manager and the managers on my projects. I would always receive a lot of guidance when assigned a new task and was never expected to just figure things out on my own. I always felt comfortable to ask questions if unsure about something but also didn't feel too micro-managed.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • First week was a bit slow but that's normal given that you need this time to settle in and get set up. The work then very quickly increased and I found myself always having something to do by the second week. It taught me a lot about time management and how much work I should take on, but also to have the confidence to let people know when I've reached my capacity.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had quite a bit of responsibility. I was in charge of my own project along with another intern and a grad and was also in charge of certain aspects of other projects, normally things like communications and organising experiments. I would have perhaps preferred a bit more autonomy but given that I was an intern, the amount of independence I was given was fair and understandable.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As I was a Technology Intern in the Production team, this role helped me to learn a lot about design and user experience. Part of my responsibilities included content management and creating webpages, which helped me to understand how web content is perceived. As a computer science student, this will become very useful to me for future projects.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Relaxed and friendly. I felt like I was able to get on with my work but also chat with whoever was around. But it was also a very professional environment where people got their work done and were always striving to deliver their best. People wanted to do their best obviously because it's all for a fantastic cause, but you also want to be able to support your team as well.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. Was set up with my accounts within a few days. Was put on a few different projects and from there was able to meet a lot of new people who could give me insight into different parts of the organisation. Was also put into a lot of meetings that introduced me how these different parts worked and how I could get involved.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • My managers made it clear from the beginning that they wanted to invest a lot of time in me to help me develop personally and professionally. I had a lot of varied tasks that helped me grow professionally but also had people that I could talk to about any difficulties and how best to work through them for my personal development.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. I enjoy who I'm working with and what I'm doing. I'm also excited about the possibilities of what I could be doing so I'm spending a lot of my remaining time learning about other directorates within the organisation, which also seem very appealing. I know that I would enjoy working here.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It was pretty good. Interns would normally meet for lunch and on occasion go for a drink. There were also a few company events that colleagues would go to. As I've only been here a short time, I got involved in some but not all of the social stuff. But there's definitely enough to be a part of.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Not too bad. London in general is quite expensive and the drinks at local pubs are a bit much. Can't really speak on living costs. There are some nice budget-friendly places around for lunch and as a CRUK staff you do get discounts at quite a few restaurants in the area.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are loads of bars and clubs around Angel. There's a nice cocktail bar called Barrio that has a good vibe. Ladybird bar is pretty good too. The Queen's Head is a nice pub that always has something going on like quizzes, stand up comedy, DJs, etc. Also serves good burgers.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, you can get involved in a lot of intern fundraising events that you create yourself. My internship took place during Stand Up To Cancer week so we used that to get interest from people to donate. There were also bucket collections that you could take part in at various tube stations across London.
