    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have really enjoyed my internship at CRUK and have learnt so much. The scheme and CRUK in general are really focused on personal development so I have attended training days for Interview Skills and CVs, LinkedIn, an info session on the CRUK grad scheme, and a project management training course.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone at CRUK is very nice and always go out of their way to help you. e.g I have been for meetings with people in lots of different departments to learn about what other roles are around the organisation and these people are always really happy to meet and friendly. They also always recommend me other people to meet with.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The leader of the internship, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], is excellent and always helpful with providing materials for your development, and any general help. She has given us so many useful things e.g. CV guides to follow, and arranged all of the training courses we have been on. She has also organised some socials for us. My manager in my department is also great. She has put me in contact with many people to meet with, has reviewed applications for me and is always on hand when I have questions. She also always lets me attend things not necessarily related to my role if we think that they will help my development.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Out of the 7 weeks I have done so far, there has only been one week where I haven't had loads to do. I prefer being busy so I have really enjoyed this environment. You are definitely given a proper workload on the internship and I have been helping out lots of different members of the team when needed.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I have been given quite a lot of responsibility in that I have been creating profiles on potential corporate partners so my research is the driving factor behind whether we build a relationship with that corporate or not. I have also written a proposal to global charities which will be used to form the first international charity consortia so that it quite important. In the corporate partnerships team in particular you are definitely given a full workload.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think that the experience being in a workplace has been really pivotal for me going forward, and CRUK provides a brilliant environment for doing so. I have learnt about managing multiple tasks at once, meeting with people I don't know, networking, attending meetings, giving presentations, and of course have learnt about the corporate partnerships we have at CRUK. I think the main thing is that my confidence in the workplace has been improved massively by my experiences here and so I am more confident going into another role when the internship ends.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • All the offices are very open and there are hundreds of people in each room so it is a very sociable atmosphere. In my team (and most others I think) we do hot desking as well so you can always meet new people. Everyone is super friendly and seems to know each other across the organisation so it is a nice working environment.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship's set up is excellent. We had a training morning at the beginning which introduced us to the topic of cancer and the organisation as a whole. We then had project management training and an organisation overview a week later. Half way through we had a mid-placement session, and then we had our CV workshop training around that time too (although I felt this have been done a bit earlier as I had already applied for a lot of jobs by that point)

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have been really pleased with all the things offered to me, e.g. online workshops for skills like negotiating, plus all the workshops for CVs and project management etc. There is also a mentor scheme in addition to having a manager - this is useful because they can help with applications for permanent jobs, organise shadowing in other departments or help you to build skills you don't have.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Whether you will continue working at CRUK after the internship is really all in the timing as it depends on if a position becomes available, which obviously there is no guarantee of. However, new roles come up all the time across the organisation so there is always the option to apply for jobs in other directorates. I would love to stay at CRUK if possible.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The group of interns are generally quite sociable and eat lunch together a few days a week. As part of the scheme you can volunteer for intern fundraising which is when I mostly see other interns, e.g. there is a music night happening that is organised by a group of us. My department have drinks every two or three weeks depending on occasions and usually eat lunch together so I'd say everyone is pretty sociable.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Usual London prices. I commute in from Essex so I cannot say how expensive other living costs are, but food is normal London prices e.g. £5ish for lunch? There are lots of supermarkets and shops around the office so there are lots of options and price ranges. Drinks are also normal London prices but CRUK gets discounts at a bar nearby where we have a lot of socials.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Cannot say about clubs as I haven't been out in this area. However there are lots of bars and it is only a 15 minute walk to Kings Cross where there are obviously loads more. The office is on a main road full of pubs and bars and it's not far from Holborn/Liverpool Street.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The Events teams are always looking for volunteers so there are always opportunities. I have found this to be a really good way of getting other skills e.g. face to face fundraising, and seeing other areas of the organisation. Some examples you can volunteer for are bucket shakes for Stand Up 2 Cancer, staff fundraising e.g. bake sales, raffles etc, British Masters golf, Celebrity Sports Quiz, Emerald and Ivy ball and events at the Crick Institute.
