    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my placement 100%. I was an intern in the Stand Up To Cancer Team - the work was varied and constant, I was never bored or left with nothing to do. The work was also contributing to a major project, I was never doing meaningless tasks. The work-life balance is great and I had so much fun.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt so valued. The work they entrusted me with was extremely important and allowed me to represent the organisation to businesses around the UK. I felt like a full time member of staff from as early as my second week. Everyone I have come into contact with at the organisation has been lovely - no complaints. I feel at home! Sometimes I find it difficult to speak in meetings/approach people with questions, but that is more my difficulty, they make it as easy as possible.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There is a great scheme put in place by the talent/recruitment team which enables you to have one to ones with your line manager weekly, as well as a mid- and end of placement reviews. There are also numerous surveys you can fill out to give any feedback. My line manager gave me so much support, from helping me with general office tasks, to helping with my CV and applying for other jobs. I also had a staff mentor (which you have to apply for, but seemed relatively easy to get)

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I always found myself to be so busy, I was given numerous projects and had to prioritise them which was great practise for a proper role. However, I was never too busy to the extent that it became stressful. (Well, I was stressed a couple of times where there were so many emails, but the team were so supportive and I could always give them some of my work) There were also some nice, needed calm points where there wasn't as much work, and periods where I took out of office time for volunteering etc

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt I was given so much responsibility, but in a very good way. I was trusted with so much important work even after I had only been there for a few weeks. Taking projects such as getting UK buildings to light up and approaching companies for donation asks. However, if I ever felt like it was too much responsibility and I was acting above my rank, a member of the team would always step in to support.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am no longer studying a degree, but in terms of going out into the world of work, the skills I learnt will help me so much. Not just general office/work skills but I have developed things like networking and internal communication skills which made situations that I have always found daunting seem easy.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Great - there was always room for fun at the same time as working and the level of support in the team was amazing - everyone was willing to make time for others and it seemed like a large group of friends rather than just colleagues because of the laughs!

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • very well - there were weekly reviews and development sessions for us to go to. You were very much left to the control of your individual team with regards to day-to-day work, which was good because it made every internship stream different and you could learn from each other as well as your own experience

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Very much - there was a mentor made available, which I used, as well as lots of development sessions to be involved in. It was also very easy to meet anyone in the organisation for a chat about their role - connections here are great. I was also able to go to talks/training things that were not specific to interns

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    Travel loan

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very! I definitely want to stay. There is an internal jobs board which makes you feel like opportunities are more accessible. Also executive roles are very accessible to new starters or those with limited experience - its more about passion and experience within the organisation, whatever the area. Its also very easy to get advice on applications

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I don't think we were the most social bunch in terms of after-work drinks and such. But I think we were just those types of people! We had a lot of lunches together and I never found myself eating alone. The HR team also made it easy to know where to go, giving us bar suggestions and even taking us to one

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London can be expensive but I have always lived and worked here so difficult for me to judge. Lunch prices were made better by the fact that we had a subsidised cafĂ©. Also, the organisation has good contacts/relationships and we often found you can get discounts in bars by showing CRUK ID.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The London nightlife is great - so I've heard. I'm more of a home bird and don't go out late much. However, lots is open late and transport links home are quite good, depending on the area. London is also so varied so there's something for everyone in terms of bars/food.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes - there was a plethora of social clubs like yoga, football, netball - some competitive and some just for fun. Communication here is also so great and it was so easy to find people to spend time with outside of work. Volunteering opportunities are also so accessible, sometimes at great events
