    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed it very much. My team were amazing, welcoming and supportive. I also found the general environment at CRUK extremely supportive especially with respect to my personal development. Meeting with other teams and working outside of my role was encouraged however at times I found I did not have an extensive work load.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues. They are all extremely friendly and supportive people that were enthusiastic about my project. They were always willing to help, teach me new things, and trusted me to take on more responsibilities. I am extremely grateful and I couldn't have asked for a better team.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was extremely supportive and I found she gave me the right amount of guidance. Initially my manager was gave me lots of guidance and support which I needed having just started. As I became familiar with CRUK, my team, and my role within it I was given much more independence.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Unfortunately, this is the only part of my internship that I have found a struggle. I am someone who likes to be very busy but my workload did not match this. Despite constantly asking for more work and new opportunities I found my work load to light. I struggled with this very much.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given almost total responsibility over my project which I was very pleased about. Yet when I needed it my manager was always there to help. Since I did not have many other tasks that I owned (I had a few tasks that were owned by other people) it is hard to judge my responsibility levels outside of my project.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am most thankful for the fact that I have learnt much about myself and my working style and preferences. This is an invaluable skill and will help me direct myself as I go forward in my career. I have also learnt some more specific skills that will most certainly help me in my chosen career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was extremely friendly, hard working and collaborative. Most of the time I enjoyed this very much. But I also found I enjoyed starting my day earlier than most so I could have a few hours in quiet in the morning to make a head start on my tasks.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was very well organised. From the first day tot the last. I had a specific project that I found was well defined which made it easy to get on with. In addition to this the introduction, interim training programmes, guidance and more were well organised and of course very useful.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Until this questionnaire I think I took this for granted. It is now clear to me that CRUK has spent a lot of time and energy investing in myself and the other interns. I have had the opportunity to attend many training programmes but have also found the general emphasis of my time here has been on my development.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Appealing. It is a great organisation to work for. There are many reasons for this: it is clear that the organisation is invested in and cares for all of its staff; it is a fabulous environment to work in and most importantly everyone is working towards the common goal of helping people.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We were all very friendly with each other and often had lunch together. I made some individual friends but I cannot say there was much socialising outside of work. This may have been because I was slightly older than most of the other interns so did not actively seek to socialise with them.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The internship was in London. I already lived in south London. So it was as you would expect. Expensive. I did not socialise in this area very much because I personally prefer south London and already had my life there.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • This is a somewhat ridiculous question. London is huge and varies greatly. As I did not live next door to the office building I cannot comment on the nightlife there. I am fairly sure that most people that live in London do not also go out by their place of work.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • A few. There were lots of sport clubs and others but as I was not here for long I did not feel comfortable in joining a sport team only to leave shortly afterwards. As much as I like to get involved with things in work I also very much like to have a life that is nothing to do with my job.
