The Role
Had a brilliant time and was made to feel very welcome right from the start!
We were given 'live tasks' by our colleagues and they were extremely helpful in showing me the ropes og how to engage in the day to day running of the business.
There was lots of help on offer from management and our specific line managers. We had regularmeetings to ensure we were on track with our internship goals, as well as progressing with our intern presentation.
There was always something to be getting on with. If the work was quiet the group project was always there to ensure that we were never left with nothing to do.
Even within the first two weeks I was being given responsibility. Markel were brilliant at ensuring that we were very much 'learning on the job.'
The internship has certianly helped in my organisational skills for my degree, as well as ensuring helping me to work productively within a team.
The Company
The office atmosphere was brilliant. The perfect balance between light-hearted conversation and productivity.
The HR department and line managers were very well organized, and they were constantly on hand if we needed anything.
The company invested a lot of resources into us during the two months. We were allowed to participate in charity days, as well as having external speakers come in and speak to us. We were also very fortunate to have members of senior management as mentors in regard to our project.
Extremely appealing. I think the fact that I have already signed a contract to return as a graduate says it all! The company ethos is brilliant and Markel are at the top of their game in ensuring employees are looked after and work in a healthy and welcoming environment.
The Culture
We all got on extremely well both inside and outside of the office. It helped that we had a group project to complete, as this insured that we were always in close contact with each other.
I was living in London during the two months so it was naturally expensive.
The City of London certainly isn't short of restaurants/bars/clubs. Although they are expensive and always quite busy, you are never short of a place to go for after-work drinks.
The sport and social committee were very good at involving us in some of the Markel activities. For instance, within the first two weeks, we had already been invited to a company outing to the T20 cricket at the Oval.
