    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I has the opportunity to explore the busiest airport in Europe, both behind the scenes and facing the public. Whilst my day job was office based, there's always an opportunity to get out and about into the heart of the business (the terminals) and get stuck in. You never lose sight of the fact that the ultimate beneficiaries of your work are the passengers, without whom the airport wouldn't exist.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was part of the Expansion team, which is obviously growing very quickly. I always felt the working environment was a meritocracy and I enjoyed being around people at the top of their game. Everybody was respectful and there were plenty of events where you could network with colleagues.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The HR team do a great job to check in with you to make sure you are making the most of your placement. Day to day, the onus is placed on you to seek feedback and guidance. This approach personally worked for me.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My workload varied. For the first couple of months of my placement I wasn't given much challenging work. However I used this time to familiarise myself with my department and beyond. Towards the end of my placement I was working some long days and even traveling to other areas of the UK to support my team. I enjoyed the intensive work environment, but I never felt under pressure to do more work than I was comfortable with.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt I had to earn my responsibility. It was up to me to use the first few months of my internship to learn and build up my network. By the end of my internship I was the lead representative on visits to prospective suppliers for a major procurement project.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It's great that the Heathrow internship is also available to graduates. The knowledge and skills I developed over the year, helped my to go on and secure a job after my internship ended!

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere can be intensive at first. However, in my office weekly 'huddles' are organised. During this time everybody comes together to give updates of what they've been up to and often consume some nice food!

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well. The comms prior to you joining is superb and you're invited to days to meet your fellow interns and have a tour of the airport before you've even started.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had a company phone and laptop to use. The company also spent a lot on structure training programmes. I also asked for special permission to go on some additional courses that were usually not available to interns. My HR manager had no probably in approving this.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Working from home

    Healthcare from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    Travel loan

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • During a time of uncertainty for the UK economy, Heathrow is expanding to help push British exports globally. I gained a job after the internship and I feel like if you join with the correct attitude, anything is possible.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I suppose this all depends on who they are. In my cohort I made plenty of friends who I know I'll stay in touch with.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The majority of cohorts are based in West London. However there's free travel to Paddington after 6.pm. Obviously all of London is expensive

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nothing to give Berlin or Ibiza a run for their money. Heathrow airport is not renowned for its nightlife.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes plenty. I took part in free boot-camp fitness classes and yoga.

    5/5
