    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was a real learning experience, and within the first week I was given real responsibility to complete work. This is different to what I was expecting, and this enabled me to really get to grips with how the office and the wider firm operates. Everyone was very helpful and accommodating to me, even though I had no experience of tax/corporate work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone in the office was helpful and accommodating, and were happy to answer questions and to offer advice ranging from careers to the city. Feedback on the work I completed was very good, people would praise work that was completed to the standards require by the firm, and would offer advice and help for work that needed more time to get it to the right standards.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was a lot of support and guidance from more senior people. I tended to work with the more junior people in the office who were in my position only a short time ago, which helped them to understand any problems I was having. With working in one of the smaller offices, I also had exposure to senior people, with roles such as senior manager, director and partner. Even though everyone was really busy, they would still take time to offer advice and to take an interest in how I was doing.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The placement was over the summer which is traditionally a quieter period for the firm, however I was still kept busy. People would pass work to me to work on, and with being in a smaller office, I was able to sample all of the different areas of the role. A standard day included client work, research and occasionally I was able to sit in on a client meeting.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • There was a great deal of responsibility throughout the placement. Within a week I was participating in projects for clients, and helping out the more senior people on the teams. I was also able to look at drafts of work that would go directly to clients, however these are always checked by a senior person which was good.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Upon arriving at Deliotte everyone has to complete online learning modules that are bank wide but also department specific e-learning courses. These were very useful in helping me get up to speed with what was expected of me on a day to day basis. These courses were also relatable to my degree as they were both from a Finance background.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was very relaxed but still professional. If you needed to speak to anyone you could do so without feeling like you were intruding or annoying them. The culture of the firm was one of the best things about my time there. Managers were still sat in the same blocks as their staff and again it was easy to go and talk to them if you needed anything.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall internship was well organised by the HR team. We had a 2 day induction at the start of the internship which ended with a big networking dinner which was very well organised. The actual internship was also well organised, we were given a pack on our first day with lots of key dates in them that we needed to keep in handy. My computer and pass access worked fine for the duration of the internship.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • At the office there was also extra training, running through computer systems and the service line I was working in. For most of the scheme, training and development took place on the job. There was also an office away day, at an outward bounds centre which helped to foster team spirit and to develop extra skills.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • In my last week as part of the summer vacation scheme, I was offered the opportunity to interview for a graduate position upon finishing university. I took this offer and was offered the position a week after the scheme finished. There seems to be a very good progression and training scheme at the firm, and they invest heavily in the people that work for them. Another positive is the help and time they give for you to take professional qualifications, as well as paying for them.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As it was a very small office there weren't many other students on a placement there, but my colleagues at Deloitte always made sure to invite me to lunch with them so I didn't feel left out. There weren't really any social events going on at the time of my placement although there were some lined up for later in the summer which I feel I would have been invited to if my internship was still going on then. I was, however, invited to one staff member's leaving do despite not knowing them well which was nice.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • During the scheme I lived and worked in Newcastle which is a great place to enjoy yourself without spending lots of money. There is a huge variety of places to eat, bars and attractions. The office is located on the quayside which has seen a lot of investment in recent years, many people would buy lunch or take their lunch out and sit in the sun by the river. Occasionally I would meet up with other vacation students after work and we would never have to go far to find a nice place to eat and have a drink.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Newcastle has a great standard of nightlife without the expensive prices of other cities. Everything you could want is here, including nightclubs, live music and small niche bars. The city is always packed on a Friday and Saturday night with a great atmosphere. The nights when there is football on are especially busy which leads to a great atmosphere.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a lot of opportunities to get involved in outside of work. There was regular drinks events held with other graduates and teams within the firm. Additionally we were all given the chance to meet the CEO of Deloitte which I thought was really good. The campus in Newcastle is huge and offers sporting activities such as football, tennis, swimming and a gym. I regularly played in a department football match each week.
