    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I truly enjoyed my summer internship at Deloitte. The toughest part was to get in really. Once there, you are actually able to enjoy the work you are supposed to do. Obviously, often it can be challenging, but that's okay, I learned a lot this way. Additionally, it is fair to say that it depends on your outgoingness, whether you have much to do or not. This can be both an opportunity, and a trap, as you amass too much work, or on the contrary not having anything.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team was not as big as I imagined, and so it did not take long to earn trust with colleagues. Whenever someone had a task, they asked me directly if I had time. I felt valued, as we would go out together every now and then, or just by asking about my opinions on different matters.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Well, that depends. My immediate supervisor monitored me and made sure I had work to do, in case I was not busy. That being said, she was not always in the office. Also, I lacked a direct HR connection, and I regretted I could not ask direct questions to a person about the recruitment or other HR related issues.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • In general, there was always work to do. It really depended on me actually. When I got involved in a project of course it did not anymore. But I was free to get involved in as many projects as I wanted. The tricky part is to find yourself a good balance, and knowing what your capabilities are.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the beginning not much, classic PPT and EXCEL work. With time and experience it got better, but I cannot expect them to give us huge, important tasks either. I liked that there was always someone checking my work, so that I did not make any mistake. In general though, I think I was given a lot of small tasks, rather than big ones.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Excel skills that I acquired will always be useful in the future. I also study business, and this year taxation, so in my last year I will basically be doing the same thing I did this summer at Deloitte. Another key point, is the importance of soft skills. I attended few meetings, where I saw how business language is used, and I learned how to behave in talks with high stakes.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Proper office with hot desks, which only allows so much fun. But the people were all down to Earth and approachable, so there was always a good mood there. I was even playing the fantasy league with some of the partners, or often had lunch or a drink with my teammates.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • During the whole internship, I felt like there was no real structure. At the beginning, I found out about some events only through other interns, and I was frustrated that there was not a single person from the HR in our office I could talk to. For that, I had to wait 2 days before a reply via email. Thankfully, there was a buddy scheme in place, that made up for it, at least to some extent.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They gave me good insights into the technical terms and taught me about the different concepts and pricing methods. I did not undergo any special training, but I felt that they were all treating me as part of the team, and therefore would help me clarify any doubts I might have had. Even partners would give me 1hr presentation about a specific topic.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very good in fact. Usually, if interns don't disappoint, they are offered a grad role. This, however, should not be taken for granted, and interest for the job as well as commitment should be displayed. Myself I secured a return offer, but I know fellow interns who did not get it, precisely because of the lack of interest.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, we were good friends within our group. Every lunch we would gather and eat together. Quite often after work, we would go to have pints, and sometimes it was organised by Deloitte itself. The nice part was that we were all from different divisions, so there was always something interesting to discuss.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Well the office is located near Holborn in London, and so consequently everything is more expensive. Although cheap alternatives could be found in a nearby Sainsbury or Tesco. Usually, I was meal prepping, but the food places were abundant and you could easily get lunch for under 6-7 pounds, less if you have just a sandwich. The canteen was subsidized too. Beer in the surroundings was expensive.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Again, it's central London. It is diversified but rather expensive. There are many both stylish and traditional bars/pubs where you can start an evening. For actual nightlife, well, I went out just once, it was a club in front of the office, and it was decent. Although my colleagues were rather skeptical about that one.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • It is during summer, and many activities are shut down during that period. Otherwise I could have studied a language in a Language exchange scheme, I could donate blood.. We also had lunches together in order to celebrate when a project was done. I wanted to play football too, but that only started when I left.
