    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The best internship I could have applied for. I am lucky enough to have found this opportunity and get to be offered the role. CRUK is a great charity to intern with as they focus on your personal development, are very flexible so can fit the internship around your current life, aren't discriminatory and encourage applicants from all backgrounds, ages and locations. There is also a great turnaround for interns staying in permanent roles at CRUK or returning back after their internships.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued within my team. As the internship scheme has been running for so long at CRUK, most people you work with or meet were interns so there is great respect for the scheme and your role. You are given responsibilities and projects to lead, alongside the usual intern jobs and tasks, which I felt improved my relationships with my colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manger and all the team I worked with were incredibly supportive and constantly gave me room to work on my own projects and assist them with numerous key projects and campaigns. They assisted with my personal development and were always open for me to ask them questions and gain advice and tips. They were really helpful with information on wanting to stay at CRUK after my internship ends.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was busy because the nature of my team and we were in a busy period of campaigns and events. But I never felt overwhelmed, I just had a little less time to focus on other areas of my internship - such as shadowing other teams or focusing on intern fundraising events.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • It depended on the tasks I was given, but prominently I dealt with confidential information and was trusted with it and trusted with making decision regarding my own projects.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I gained experience working in an office, which I never had before, and in working with a busy campaigns and events team which allowed me to develop my communication, organisation, prioritisation and team working skills. Everything I did was relevant and nothing was too menial. I got to be involved in really exciting events that are visible to the public and would definitely help advance my resume.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was a brilliant team office environment. Everyone was so busy and everyone got their work done, but it was done within a great supportive and friendly team relationship. The whole Angel office is open plan and you can easily move between teams and familiarise yourself with the whole office. Lots of people, depending on departments, hot desk so you end up talking to lots of people in a very positive environment.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Our internship was different to the previous cohorts, as we were the first group to be paid. Therefore our internship structure was slightly different and they weren't necessarily prepared for it. It was still great and I got a lot out of it. However we had problems accessing our IT accounts in the first week which hindered our work. There was also a handover of the manager of the interns so we didn't have structure for a couple of weeks but it was resolved quickly when another member of HR stepped in to help.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • CRUK put a lot into personal development and invest greatly in their interns - subsequently there is a high turn-around for previous interns being employed by CRUK. We were constantly being given recommendations for internal and external workshops, given internship career talks by previous interns currently working at CRUK and were given access to development packs that we worked with our managers.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, every week the interns organised a social which was a great way to meet each other and get to know each other really well even though we were in different departments. We also had intern fundraising committees and organised social events for all CRUK employees which was really fun.

  • Yes, we had numerous staff fundraising events, volunteering opportunities and social sports clubs which was another great way to meet people outside of your departments and see how the rest of the charity works. Volunteering at numerous fundraising events was great and i would thoroughly recommend it!
