    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The summer placement at Deloitte provided me with a very real learning experience and I developed a number of key skills throughout my time here. I was given a good level of responsibility and expected to take responsibility of my work. Additionally this has been a very beneficial experience to add to my CV and has been a good talking point at interviews and assessment centres.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Throughout my time here, I felt well valued by my fellow colleagues and team members. They would take the time to review my work and provide me with both positive and constructive feedback, which I found to be very beneficial. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to work on a number of projects with senior members of staff, which demonstrated that my ideas and input was valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Upon joining the firm, we were given training, which provided a good basis of knowledge and explained in more detailed the operation and strategy of Deloitte. My line manager was very supportive throughout my time and I felt that I could always consistently turn to the rest of my team for guidance when I needed it.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • How busy I was did tend to vary throughout the placement. During the first week or so, the work was quite slow and I did have to seek out additional work and responsibility. However, after speaking to my line manager, I was given more work. When working on important client work, I was very busy and I had to stay late in the office on a number of occasions but overall the work/life balance was positive.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • After several weeks with the firm, I was given a significant amount of responsibility. I was tasked with leading a number of projects and I was held accountable for delivery of these projects. This was a great opportunity for personal development. I was managing conversations with clients and this gave me the opportunity to demonstrate my ability.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I had no prior experience in the Consulting sector and therefore, very quickly had to process a lot of new information. I learnt a lot during this short space of time, and whilst this will not directly impact on my degree, the transferable skills developed are invaluable. Moreover, I grew greatly in confidence during my time at Deloitte.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I found there to be a really positive atmosphere in the office at Deloitte. Whilst it was a very professional working environment, due to the client facing nature of the business, employees were friendly and chatty, making it easy to get to know people on both a professional and personal level.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I found the summer placement at Deloitte to well-structured. We received a good level of training prior to joining our teams and had a number of beneficial activities organised throughout. My only criticism is that I was not provided with enough work at the beginning of the placement and I feel that my manager could have been better briefed, however, after a conversation this problem was quickly resolved.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Very well invested in! The training was conducted in Birmingham, where all accommodation, food and travel costs were provided for. This training alone demonstrated the level of investment that Deloitte places into the interns. In addition to this, there is online training that can be completed in your own time throughout the placement.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects at Deloitte are very appealing. Upon completing the internship, I was offered a place on the graduate programme, which tended to be the case also with most other interns. Deloitte has a great culture and invests heavily in its employees, I am really looking forward to beginning my career at such a well-established and respected firm.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We only had 2 socials formally organised by the company, which was a nice occasion to socialise with students who were doing their internships in different departments. I generally socialised from other Tax interns - we would have lunch or drinks together.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I did my internship in London, which is a very expensive city, so the costs of living and socialising are very hard. I study in London, so I simply stayed in my term-time accommodation, but for those who study in other places it was quite a big expense. But Deloitte was paying enough.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in the area I worked was very limited, but most placement students don't live in the direct vicinity of the workplace. In the area that I lived the nightlife was very active, being only a short tube journey away from central London and also having lots to do in the local area, such as bars and clubs.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I personally have got involved in lots of activities outside of work, joining a local football team, going to a local church and being involved in many of the events that they were running. However, I do think that this is more down to the individual than what is available, given that you only have few months with which to be a part of it. There were lots of opportunities available though.
