    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement year was a great opportunity to see how concepts i had learnt in my degree are applied in real life. Seeing and learning this added to the enjoyment of the placement. Intel also treats us just like real full time employees giving us access to all of the perks and benefits any other employee would have. There is a real focus on making the site a great place to work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • With my direct team due to many of them working from home constantly or being based in other countries I am not as close to them as i could be. However my point of view is always valued and treated as equal. It is often seen as a very good insight to have from someone younger who has not got the attitude of "this is how its always been done". Outside of my direct team with the connections i have made in my office i feel very valued. My opinions and views on how problems should be solved carried weight.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support was always available from my manager but due to him being in another country was sometimes more difficult or inconvenient to reach. However my supervisor who is on site was far better for guidance. One thing that could have been better was the frequency of which performance was reviewed formally but i accept that this is something i could have pushed harder for.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • On some days my actual job role would have nothing that i could do. However because of this i was encouraged to get involved in other areas of the company. Because of this i always had tasks i could be completing. This was only ever a problem if both my job role and my extra commitments required attention simultaneously but this is something that can be dealt with

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a server room to run and maintain almost however i want. To begin with this was arguably to much responsibility to have put on my but with guidance and careful thought about decisions this didn't end up being a problem. It was a really good opportunity to have some control about my workload but for it to also be important to my wider team and customers.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am now far more versed in how hardware and in particular processors function and how to actually run and maintain them. Also the "soft skills" i have learnt this year have been very useful. Skills like communication in a professional environment, integrity , problem solving under pressure have all be improved and will be sure to be useful

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Intel strives to make its office a great place to work. This meant perks such as a games room, massage chair, free fruit and drinks were available to all. Things like having a television put up to watch the Olympics in the canteen really help create a fun enjoyable atmosphere. There are frequently events going on in work time that you are encouraged to volunteer for / attend.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I had no issued with anything organisation wise with my placement. The placement program here is quite large and as such there are 60+ other Interns going through everything. Because of this many of the processes felt regimented but were ultimately successful and a good way of on boarding everyone with the information that was required

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company feels to have put a great effort into training all of its interns. There has only been 1 occasion where i have missed out on an opportunity simply because of being an intern (The engineers in my team were flying to a conference in the US) but this is mostly because much of the content would have been to high a level for me and i would not be presenting.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would love to work here in the future. I think this industry is right for me and that I would have the opportunity to build a wondergul career with the company. There are many exciting topics I could work on, so I can only imagine that as a permanent employee there would be even more.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are a large contingent of Interns at Intel. The first month and last month are spent handing over from and too interns. In this period of time there are several events organised a week and are a really good way of getting to know your fellow interns. After handover officially organised events slow down but as people are now close friends gatherings do continue to occur but are just not company sponsored.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living and socialising in Swindon is not the most expensive that it could be. When compared to many other cities and towns it can probably be considered fairly cheep. However what is lacking in the area where the interns all live is a cheep location to meet for drinks within walking distance.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Swindon is not particularly large. There are a handful of clubs that you can go to but ultimately it offers everything that you would need. Due to its good transport links it is also easy to visit other areas where you have friends as both myself and many other interns do.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are a lot of volunteering opportunities, but they were mostly close to the bigger office. We could join them if we decided to organise a trip together. Also, people would do sports for charity which I found that it was encouraged. One could as well volunteer in a location at their convinience(For example teaching programming in schools close to where they lived).
