    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Bosch employed about 20 interns in the Power Tools department every year, this makes socialising in and out of work very easy, which is especially important when you are relocating. I have heard that Bosch used to do events like the Bosch Olympics that brought all department together team building. Sadly there is little opportunity to socialise with other departments or get involved with any form of team building, there for moral is very low in the office.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Within Power Tools in the Denham office there is a very clear divide between full time staff & interns. One example is during the first few months there are stickers with intern on certain desks, which almost feel you are at school. While you do get given a large amount of responsibility, over 50% of the jobs you are given as simply handed to you because a full time member of staff does not wan to do it.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • This ultimately depends on which direct manager you report to. I was very luck and got the manager i request on the interview day. He was very supportive and worked through problems with me so i could learn how to solve them in the future. There were only the two of us in our direct department so i managed to pick up many projects that had a great deal of responsibility, e.g. communicating with new customers.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • In my role work came thick and fast, a majority of my work had to be completed within a week and everything had very immediate deadlines. However many of our products are seasonal and there were a few weeks towards the end of certain months when work slowed down a bit.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my time at Bosch as a marketing intern I was given the responsibility of managing the external market data for power tools UK. This information that i collated and presented in many different way would be the base of our future marketing campaigns as this gave the sales team an idea of what products were selling well and what we should focus as hero products. This target would then be feed back to me where i would create some of the marketing materials, e.g. poster, web banners..... Sales would then be monitored to see if these market data trends were inline with out actual sales.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My role was very numerical and my Excel ability has increased massively, this means that units such as analysis and accounting will be far easier. This placement has also made me more organised and learnt how to priorities effectively. Bosch pay interns to take part in the Build training which is a 5 day course that works through basic team working skills & is very beneficial for self awareness.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • As previously mentioned there were little team building programs offered, which mean that different departments did not socialise with each other. There was also a clear divide between interns & permanent members of staff which occasionally created friction. 1 star is a very fair reflection of the office atmosphere.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Bosch have been employing placement students for many many years and organisation was very good.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Bosch provide a 5 day raining program called BUILD which works on many team working skills which is a very beneficial program.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Power tools does not have a graduate scheme and it is very rare for students to be kept on, maybe 1 student a year out of 20+ will get a job but that is though them selfs actively trying over the company offering.

    1/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes as there were over 20 students to socialise with, many of which have also relocated.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As Uxbidge is zone 7 prices are not to high to live and will cost approx £525 with bills (when sharing).

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • While the office is based in Denham which is incredibly quiet, many of the students live 15 minute drive away in Uxbridge where there are many pubs and shops. The underground will also take you into the centre of London in about a hour.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Football & badminton are run by interns/ permanent members of staff and are really the only for of socialising offered by Bosch itself.

    2/5
