Global Advisory Intern Review

On top of my everyday tasks that allowed me to explore my degree on a more practical, real-life level through intense exposure to a variety of transactions, I also enjoyed getting to know the team on a social level and through fundraising activities. More specifically, I particularly enjoyed the Fundraising Intern Challenge which allowed me to further my team-building skills and be innovative with fundraising ideas. It was also inspiring to hear Vice Chairman of Rothschild & Co talk about purposeful business and the importance of giving back to the community. The culture of the firm very much suits what I am looking for in a firm as it combines excellent work with corporate responsibility. I also enjoyed the team learning sessions which exposed me to people from other divisions and gave me a better understanding of different industries. What I enjoyed the most was how effective Rothschild & Co is with giving detailed feedback and on how to implement it on a practical level. Finally, the social events were great such as karting, which took place outside the office and involved a lot of teamwork – it was so much fun! I could not have wished for a better internship experience!

There are many great firms out there but what differentiates Rothschild & Co to me is the culture of care and ethos, which bears great importance to me personally. I came to this conclusion after listening to the experience of friends and fellow classmates working across dozens of firms in the City, and comparing it to my experience, and this has particularly struck a chord with me.

My supervisors have always been very open and willing to give me advice and support during the internship, even during busy times! It was inspiring to hear their growth stories, both personal and professional, and how one can develop their skillset in the right environment to the stage of becoming a leader of the team.

I had two rotations which allowed me to immerse myself into two different business areas, meet more people, and get a variety of new knowledge. I was put on a number of exciting projects which gave me a better understanding of how Rothschild & Co deals with clients’ requests on a daily basis.

People in my team were genuinely interested to give me as much responsibility as possible. For instance, a Director invited me to a meeting with him after our first brief catch-up over coffee and allowed me to report directly to him on one of the live projects (which I really enjoyed). This gave me the highly valued experience of being part of an actual deal, alongside great supervision which, in turn, offered me a clearer understanding of the value of independent advisory work.

The internship provides plenty of opportunities to hone one's business and technical skills, improve personal and professional qualities, gain the knowledge and confidence to become more effective more quickly. For example, by working directly with Director and looking together into debt and ownership structures, I got a better understanding of what debt is composed of and how it can be present elsewhere within the company’s corporate structure, making things seem much more challenging for analytical purposes. It was exciting to delve deeper into these companies and learn new things along the way. Lessons such as these are unique and can only be learnt in practice, and not in books or business schools, and require thorough analytical thinking skills.

Very appealing! I cannot underestimate the importance of high retention rates within the firm. Most of the senior members of my team have been working at Rothschild & Co since the very beginning of their careers. It was also great to know that there is a possibility for internal mobility within Rothschild & Co, as part of the firm’s key cultural value of having a long-term view on career development, relationships with clients and a sustainable business model.
