    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My internship with BuroHappold was definitely an enjoyable experience as I've gotten the opportunity to work alongside skilful engineers on some iconic structures. It was also a flexible experience, allowing me to be actively involved in both in-office and on-site tasks and activities, which had undoubtedly extended the scope of my knowledge beyond what is taught in universities .

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were very accommodating from start till end of my internship duration. Despite their busy schedules, they were always willing to provide the support and guidance I required to complete my tasks. Furthermore, I really felt like I was a part of the company as I had the opportunity to join team meetings, etc.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Throughout the duration of my internship, my task supervisors would always see it to it that I had sufficient tasks at hand in order for me to maximise my learning experience. Before starting a new task, they would often spend some time explaining the objectives and some theoretical background related to the task, allowing me to fully comprehend my approach towards its completion.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Days when I had insufficient tasks were minimal and only occurred if a project submission is nearing. Most of the time, I had a perfect balance of tasks for a single working day for it to be enjoyable as well as comfortable. There were some instances in which the tasks were urgent, although my task manager would still ensure that sufficient time is given for a quality submission to be produced.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Although some of my tasks didn't have a specific deadline, they were definitely project oriented. Seeing my work utilised in the project filings folder gives me a sense of responsibility, knowing that my submission would go through the next stage - which is further review and then issue for construction.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The numerous skills I've acquired from my internship would definitely be useful for my degree studies and career development. For instance, my experience with concepts that are still yet to be taught by my university will allow me to further enhance my understanding when I take the related course. Also, the opportunity to work with BuroHappold has given me a clear idea of the vital skills required by the industry which is deemed useful when undertaking further studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office offered a comfortable working environment for all its employees. The people were clearly at-home and happy during each day worked in the office. I've also noticed that employees formed a great bond with each other, which I think is an integral part of why the teams have outstanding teamwork.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Upon my date of joining, there had been a series of company inductions which had familiarised me with several aspects such as company management, finance, safety, etc. Also, they've offered constant communication and support from the time I was applying for a post until the preparation for my upcoming end date.

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would love to be a part of the company in the near future since during my internship, it did not only provide an opportunity for me to apply my knowledge on some of the world's most iconic structures, but it also kept it employees' welfare as one of its main priority. I believe BuroHappold would continue doing so and hence landing a full-time job in the company would be an honour.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There wasn't quite of a shock for me as I grew up in Dubai. Also, the fact that my colleagues were friendly and accommodating made me feel at ease. I believe that a part of the company's good working environment included each one's respect towards differences in culture and beliefs.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area I worked in had a metro station close by, hence it is very accessible and affordable especially for students like me. Being in an office building, there are lots of restaurants in proximity to the office. The cost covers quite a vast range, catering to fine dining and fast food.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I personally do not engage in nightlife but I do believe that there are a few good places around Dubai. However, as I have not really experienced it directly, I do not think that I could give an accurate rating for this field as I am only relying on my knowledge from friends.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were several activity opportunities that came up during my internship duration. One of which I got involved in was the WIBSE Women in Engineering talk, wherein I got to meet a handful of inspiring women in the industry of technology. Apart from this, there are also lots of active programs around Dubai.
