    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The whole year has been great, since day one up until the last week you are learning a lot about the automotive industry on a daily basis. You get to meet a lot of diferent people from different backgrounds, giving you a good insight not only in your role, but all other roles in a car manufacturing company. Definetly a year to remember, full of positive outcomes.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Collegues here at Rolls-Royce are very friendly and always willing to help if you are struggling or in doubt. Made a lot of new friends and also there are a lot of students in a placement year too.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager helped me to get introduced to everything and everyone, and taught me about different processes. He later on gave me more and more responsabilities to build up my training and make the most of this year. He is always there incase you need something from him or don't know what to do.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The work load varied a lot to me, as I was projects parts quality, depending on the stage of the project will have a lot to do or not so much. This would allow you to experience and learn in stressfull conditions as well as have time to organise yourself. Prioritising the work load has a big influence here, as there is plenty to do, but some of them have a lot greater importance, so you will learn from it to manage your time to the workload.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • In my placement I had some big responsabilities, such as updating all KPI's from my department, to run the "NvP" process (module overlaping/gap and measurement analysis) for parts quality department, as well as attending to managing meeting with managers from all different technologies in production to update and feedback each other. Problems which have a risk of production line stop are also dealt with, with the highest priority and importance, varying a lot depending on the issue. Although, you can ask for help if needed, so it is nothing to worry about.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The amount of skills and knowledge learnt here is incredible, Not only acadamic or proffesional but having to deal with many people from many different backgrounds and countries helps you also develop social and communications skills. But also helped me a lot in having a better understanding of engineering theories which I had never seen in practice during this year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • In my department, the atmosphere varies along with times, depending on the build phases of the cars. Although in general, everyone is very friendly and happy with good sense of humor as well as being in a profesional manner. Everyone is here to support each other.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My placement was very well set up to make the most out of it. I started in projects QMT at the same time as the new Rolls-Royce project was going to start its first buildphase. This means I have seen the project from the first car built, to the time were it is being produced and sold to costumers (watching all the industrialisation cycle). This allows you to see the early stages of a project up until release to the market, watching the maturation of the products and improvements made from the first prototypes.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The department has always helped me learn as much as possible. They have included me in a lot of training sessions done by BMW personel from Munich as well as sending me to a supplier in Germany to see the other side of the business and learn from a quality management technitian while on this trip to review several topics and learn how they solved previous problems in the actual plant where the supplier manufactured the parts.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    National Travel

    International Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Rolls-Royce is a growing company, and will need more and more employees for the next few years for sure. Although political changes are going to happen soon in UK and might affect (Brexit).

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are mettings to get to know other students in placements, and we all get to know eachother and go out to different activities in our own time. There are a few students per department, so there are plenty of them at the company.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living is average, although there is not much to do in chichester. There are cinemas, bowling, trampoline, a lot of parks and gardens etc... but its a small town and restricted. Although you can go to Brighton or Portsmouth which is not too far and have plenty of things to do and visit.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Near Chichester there are no clubs, only two pubs which close by 2-3 am. Brighton's nightlife is a lot busier but its an hour away by train.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are several E-mails from time to time where people organise some activities like football, cycling etc... which everyone is able to join. Sometimes the department will organise an activity for everyone which is always fun.
